Senior dogs and puppies need coats, even arctic breeds, because their ability to regulate body temperature is compromised by slower metabolisms, reduced fat, or less developed coats. Seniors often struggle with arthritis (aided by warmth), while puppies lack sufficient insulating fur. Even thick-coated dogs can lose heat on their unprotected bellies.
Why Seniors Need Coats
Reduced Metabolism & Circulation: As dogs age, they lose heat faster, and poor circulation makes it harder to stay warm.
Arthritis Relief: Cold, windy, and wet weather can significantly increase stiffness and pain in senior joints.
Lower Body Fat: Senior dogs often lose muscle mass and fat, which act as insulation against the cold.
Why Puppies Need Coats
Immature Immune Systems: Young puppies are more sensitive to temperature extremes and cannot tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs.
Thin Coats: Many puppies haven't developed their full, dense adult undercoat, leaving them exposed.

❄️ The "House Husky" Winter Myth: Is their coat actually ready? ❄️
We know the drill: It’s snowing, it’s 5°F, and your Husky is doing "the statue" in the yard, refusing to budge. But there is a huge physiological difference between a Husky’s DNA and their actual climatization.
The Science of the Coat: 🐕‍🦺
Huskies are double-coated, but that coat is reactive. A Husky living in a climate-controlled home does not grow the same ultra-dense, "Arctic-grade" undercoat as a dog living outdoors 24/7. Their bodies adapt to your 70°F living room, meaning they lack the full insulation needed for prolonged exposure to extreme lows.
Why 5°F matters for indoor dogs:
Thermal Shock: Moving from a warm house to sub-zero temps is a massive shock to a system that isn't "primed" for it.
Undercoat Density: Without the constant trigger of cold air, the undercoat stays thinner and less oily, providing significantly less protection against frostbite.
The Freeze Point: According to the Tufts Animal Condition and Care (TACC) scale, even heavy-coated breeds face increased risk as temperatures drop toward zero, especially when acclimated to indoor life.
The Reality Check:
Just because they want to stay out doesn't mean their coat is equipped to handle it for hours. Short play sessions are great, but don't let their stubbornness fool you into thinking they are invincible. Their "indoor" fur has limits that a "working" coat doesn't.
Keep the snow sessions fun, but keep them supervised! 🐾❄️

🚫🐾 What’s Toxic for Pets? 🐾🚫

In preparation of holiday season it's important to remember our furry friends are curious by nature — and sometimes that curiosity can lead to trouble! Here are some common household items that are toxic to cats and dogs:
🍫 Chocolate – Especially dark or baking chocolate.
🧅 Onions & Garlic – Found in many cooked dishes and seasonings.
🍇 Grapes & Raisins – Even a small amount can cause kidney failure.
☕ Caffeine – Found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, and chocolate.
🌿 Certain Houseplants – Lilies (toxic to cats), poinsettias, aloe, and philodendrons.
💊 Human Medications – Pain relievers like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and antidepressants can be dangerous.
🚬 Ni****ne & Vapes – Highly toxic even in small doses.
🧴 Cleaning Products – Bleach, detergents, and disinfectants can cause burns and poisoning.
👉 If your pet ingests something suspicious, don’t wait — call us or the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline (888-426-4435) right away.
Keeping toxic items out of reach helps ensure your pets stay safe, happy, and healthy! 💚🐶🐱

Every dog is
a once in
a lifetime gift.

Doesn’t matter How
many you’ve held,
each leaves a mark..

They heal your wounds,
they teach your soul,
they claim your heart.

And when they go,
that piece remains,
forever theirs.

Respect another dog's space when out walking your pup. There are many reasons an owner is trying to advocate for their dog's distance - training, social skills set, etc. Never let your dog run up to another pup without permission. 🐕🐕
