Senior dogs and puppies need coats, even arctic breeds, because their ability to regulate body temperature is compromised by slower metabolisms, reduced fat, or less developed coats. Seniors often struggle with arthritis (aided by warmth), while puppies lack sufficient insulating fur. Even thick-coated dogs can lose heat on their unprotected bellies.
Why Seniors Need Coats
Reduced Metabolism & Circulation: As dogs age, they lose heat faster, and poor circulation makes it harder to stay warm.
Arthritis Relief: Cold, windy, and wet weather can significantly increase stiffness and pain in senior joints.
Lower Body Fat: Senior dogs often lose muscle mass and fat, which act as insulation against the cold.
Why Puppies Need Coats
Immature Immune Systems: Young puppies are more sensitive to temperature extremes and cannot tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs.
Thin Coats: Many puppies haven't developed their full, dense adult undercoat, leaving them exposed.
