Lets begin.... first a breeder will buy a quality female and spend between 5-10k π³). That pup will be raised, vetted, health tested and evaluated before deciding if said dog is an ideal candidate for the breeding process roughly around 1.5-2yrs of age. Initial investment...$$$$$$
Once female is ready to breed her estrus cycles must be monitored by progesterone testing which is $100+ per test. Our typical females are pulled 2-6 times..
Once number is achieved breeder pays for the stud fee $2,000-3,500 to be shipped for the AI, TCI OR SI procedure which costs us $500. At the 35 day mark we must confirm pregnancy by ultrasound $150. Then on day 52-55 we the breeder go to the vet to get an x-ray to count skeletons and track development $150.
From that day forward you are under house arrest with your female until pups are 3 weeks of age at minimum...
You must monitor females temps & behaviors, to avoid emergencies with at home births because MOST fremchies can not successfully give birth without complications!
During this time there are often other vet visits for reverse progesterone pulls and ultrasounds to determine health of pups and if Dam is in fact in active labor to further avoid emergencies.. If all goes well, the female will make it to day 63 then go in for a scheduled c-section costing $1500-$3000 depending on the clinic and hours needed. If an emergency arises these number WILL more than double!!
Now that all pups have arrived we pray that they are all healthy and watch them around the clock! Pups need to be fed every two hours by Dam if everything goes accordingly...but often human intervention is required so you will not sleep for 2-3wks! Even at 2 week mark pups are still nursing every 2-3 hours and the breeder is not getting much sleep because Dams need monitoring for mastitis, pups monitored for aspiration, and making sure Dam does not lay on pups.
Now....I will say MOST litters do not occur without some obstacle so you must be prepared with the proper medical equipment, vet on call, and meds! Didnt you know you become a full-time nurse??!
Hopefully we have all made it to the 4wk mark...now the vetting begins!! First Worming and health check visits, then vaccinations $65 per pup. Puppies require mush & puppy formula to wean which we spare NO expense and provide quality nutrition! Dam is also eating more than triple her regular dietary needs to keep up with pups demands. Both cost $$$$
Then there are whelping pens, whelping pads, toys, bedding, constant laundry and cleaning EVERYTHING. $$$$
During all this time and expense...you are working full time not compensated (other than the sweet puppy breathe) and very much in the hole financially until pups are rehomed. Thats a process all in itself!!! Networking, advertising, marketing, screening people, and placement which often requires securing transport. In addition, any good breeder keeps up with theor past pups even mentoring those pups future breedings, answers questions day and night from prospective & previous clients, deals with hasty rude humans and scammers trying to steal our hardwork ALL just STEPS AND MORE STEPS...
You are probably getting the GIST of it by now but this is only the shortlist if all fares well. Mother Nature is ultimately in charge. Complications, loss of pregnancy, and loss of full litters are also possibilities that even the most prepared and experienced breeders will endure. Its often a BRUTAL battle.
