Meet Mommy, a 1-year-old Shih Tzu who came to see us for her first visit—and she was an absolute sweetheart! 💕

During her exam, we noticed that her adult canine teeth are not present, aside from a retained baby (deciduous) canine on the left side. This can happen if the adult canines never developed or if they are present but have not erupted.

The next step would be dental X-rays to determine whether the adult teeth are missing or simply unerupted. This helps us ensure there are no underlying issues and allows us to plan the best care for her moving forward.

The good news—Mommy is doing great and handled her visit like a champ! 🐾

🌟 April is National Heartworm Awareness Month! 🌟

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition that can affect our beloved pets. These foot-long worms can cause severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs. The life cycle of heartworms involves mosquitoes, which play a crucial role in spreading this disease.

When an infected animal is bitten by a mosquito, the mosquito picks up microscopic baby worms called microfilaria. These larvae then develop and can infect other pets when the mosquito bites again. It takes about six months for these larvae to mature into adult heartworms, which can live for several years in our furry friends.

That’s why it’s essential to talk with your veterinarian about heartworm prevention! Regular check-ups and preventative treatments can help keep your pets safe and healthy. 🐾💖
