"May your arrows fly straight and your aim be true"
Hunting season is here!
Just a few helpful hints if you are planning on taking anything to your taxidermist. I know it’s long but a quick read will save you some money and your taxidermist a big headache.
SHOULDER AND PEDESTAL MOUNTS
-Do NOT drag your deer. This causes bald spots.
-Do not cut past the sternum when gutting.
-Do not slice the neck.
-Do not make any cuts from the hair side. Cut from under the skin. Bird beak knives work very well for this.
-Tube out the legs down to the knee joint if possible. If not, cut where the white hair meets the dark hair on the BACK of the legs and avoid cutting through any white hair in the armpits. DO NOT CUT THE ARMPITS. DO NOT CUT ON THE INSIDE OF THE LEGS! See the photos below.
-Leave plenty of cape in the brisket area. If you think you have enough add another 12 inches before you cut.
-You can bring the entire cape down to the tail your taxidermist will cut off what they don’t need.
Or cut around the belly 1/2 way between the front and back legs and between the shoulders and the butt.
-You don’t need to wash the blood off with a hose. Introducing extra moisture can cause hair loss (slippage).
-Place the cape and head in a thick contractors trash bag and set it in a freezer if possible. A cooler will work for a few days but a freezer will halt any bacteria growth.
-When using an ice chest do not get the cape wet. Put the deer inside a thick trash bag and then put the ice AROUND the trash bag; not inside the bag.
-Try and spread out the cape to help it cool to
