The LCHS is a private, community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides shelter for unwanted and stray animals (primarily dogs and cats) while working to end pet overpopulation, reduce the need for euthanasia, and improve the humane treatment and well-being of companion animals. It serves a population of roughly 70,000 residents in southwestern Montana and a service area covering roughly

5,500 square miles. Since its creation in 1964, LCHS has continued to grow and expand its facilities and programs along with the growth of the community. In an effort to decrease the amount of animals that come through the shelter, we work tirelessly to make sure the pets in our community are vaccinated and spayed and neutered while in our care. LCHS also has a comprehensive foster care program - including day-trips and sleepovers - in order to help meet the needs of all the animals in our care while they wait for their forever homes. We also have multiple specialized personnel who work to socialize, exercise, and train animals in our care, in order to provide the best quality of life for the animals. If you are interested in adopting an animal you find our adoptable animals at http://www.lchsmontana.org/

If you have any questions regarding this page or anything on it please email at us [email protected].

A heartfelt thank you to our Platinum Paws Pack Leader sponsor, Silverman Law Office, PLLC !

Silverman Law Office has been one of the Lewis & Clark Humane Society’s biggest supporters for years, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued generosity and commitment to the animals in our care. From supporting our day-to-day lifesaving work to stepping up as a main Event Sponsor for Spayghetti, their impact on our organization and community has been tremendous.

Thank you for standing beside us year after year and helping make second chances possible for so many animals.

Kitten season is here, and we need your help!

We send home a lot of kennel cabs with adopted animals, and now our supply is running low. If you’ve adopted from us and still have one of our kennel cabs at home, we would be so grateful if you could bring it back.

These carriers help us safely transport kittens, cats, and small animals when they need us most — and right now, we really need them!

Kennel cabs can be dropped off at Lewis & Clark Humane Society Tuesday–Saturday. Thank you for helping us keep little ones safe this kitten season!

Dear Humans,

We've had a staff meeting.

Actually, we laid around looking cute while the humans did all the work, but we're calling it a staff meeting anyway.

As summer heats up, we've realized there are a few things that would make shelter life a little more comfortable while we wait for our forever homes. Some things help keep us cool. Some help keep our shelter clean. Some help our humans get us ready for adoption. And some are just plain fun because, frankly, being adorable is exhausting work.

The good news? Our humans put together an Amazon Wishlist with all the things we need, and you can send them directly to the shelter without having to guess what would be most helpful.

Every item helps make life a little better for the dogs and cats waiting here. It helps our staff spend more time caring for us, helps keep our spaces comfortable and clean, and helps more of our friends find their way home.

Plus, if we're being honest, we think your shopping addiction should be used for good.

So if you've ever looked at one of our photos and said, "Awwww," this is your chance to turn that "Awwww" into something really helpful.

Check out our Amazon Wishlist and help us have the coolest summer possible while we wait for our families. ❤️

Average Joe: If you can dodge chaos, you can dodge shelter life.

Average Joe came from a home with quite a few other indoor cats, so he knows what it’s like to share space. But much like the Average Joe’s Gym crew, he does best when things aren’t too intense, too crowded, or run by anyone with big Globo Gym energy.

When other cats are around, Joe can get a little overwhelmed and may choose to keep to himself. He’s not necessarily opposed to a teammate, but he’ll need a slow introduction and the right match. No sudden dodgeballs (or wrenches), please.

This handsome guy has a few very specific requirements: fresh water straight from the faucet, because he appreciates the finer things, and a nice high perch where he can supervise the action from above like he’s watching the championship match.

Average Joe is looking for a home that understands he may need a little time to settle in and feel comfortable. But once he does, you’ll realize he’s anything but average.

He’s quirky. He’s opinionated. He knows what he likes. And with the right person, he just might be ready to go all the way to the finals.

Come meet Average Joe. Because around here, we believe in the little guy.

Calling all our Husky lovers!

Atlas and Nala have been waiting for a month.

At most shelters, that may not sound like long. But at LCHS, where most dogs go home in less than a week, a month feels like forever.

Atlas and Nala need a home together. That can feel like a big ask. But for them, it isn’t optional. Atlas would absolutely melt into a puddle without Nala. She is his confidence, his comfort, and his safe place.

Atlas is the softer, more reserved one. He takes a little time to trust, but once he does, he is loyal, sweet, and deeply attached. Nala is his opposite in all the best ways: outgoing, affectionate, chatty, and full of happy kisses. She helps him be brave.

Together, they are loving, goofy, and incredibly sweet. They have done well with other dogs, cats, and kids (but please, no livestock), and they are ready to fill a home with twice the love, twice the personality, and probably twice the conversations.

They just need someone willing to see past “two big dogs” and recognize what they really are: two best friends who belong together.

Atlas and Nala have waited long enough. Come meet them.

Kai is nine years old.

He is a big, sweet senior boy with a gray face, a gentle heart, and absolutely no business spending his golden years waiting in a shelter.

Kai is proof that age is just a number. He still has plenty of life left to live, plenty of love left to give, and plenty of adventures he’d be more than happy to join you for. In his foster home, Kai lived with 7- and 10-year-old kids and adored them. He played ball with them during the day and curled up to sleep with them at night.

He already knows sit, shake, down, and even hug. He walks nicely on a leash. He loves snacks, especially baby carrots, because apparently Kai is both distinguished and health-conscious.

Kai is affectionate, smart, loyal, and still has plenty of pep in his step. He is past the puppy chaos, but nowhere near done being someone’s best friend.

Kai can be selective about his dog friends, but has also done well with some and previously lived successfully with another dog. Slow introductions and the right match will be important for him.

What Kai needs most is a chance.

A chance to be seen for the wonderful dog he is. A chance to trade the noise of the shelter for a soft bed, a quiet evening, and a family to love. A chance to spend this chapter of his life where he belongs: home.

Come meet Kai. He’s been waiting long enough. https://lchsmontana.org/pet/kai-2/
