Welp, guess we’re going to to revisit something unpleasant so that i can warn other vendors.

As many might recal, we had an incident at the Billings reptile expo a couple weeks ago, where someone purchased a crested gecko and then brought it back some time later, dead.

This was a healthy adult gecko that we’d been raising for 4-5 years. Several other vendors, as well as customers at the store were familiar with the gecko and she was somewhat of a shop favorite. Most of this is just to emphasize that it wasn’t some animal of unknown origin that we just got the day before, but one with a longstanding history of goof health and a plethora of witnesses to that fact.

While i was not witness to anything that happened after the gecko left our table, it is my belief that they probably overheated the gecko. At the time they came back they were polite and seemed genuinely upset about the gecko so i did not feel the need to make any negative remarks about them in my previous post, thinking that a painful lesson was learned, and would not be repeated. i explained what i belived happened, and when they asked about money, i declined to refund them but i encouraged them to get the opinions of other vendors and breeders at the show, and that if they had other more plausible explanations that could make me at fault somehow, to have them come talk to me, or tell me who andi’d talk to them, and afterward i would then refund the purchas price. So there was a check i added just incase it was me being crazy or unreasonable. They did not come back, and nobody came to talk to me. I also went out of my way to ask some breeders for a second opinion because i take these things very seriously.

Well fast forward to today, i’m notified of a chargback from their card company. So apparently they feel neither guilt nor shame about killing the gecko, and i must have just misjudged (in their favor) as apparenly they care only about getting their money back for the animal they killed. Due to this being an in person event, i dont have any information except an email, but for any other vendors i know, i would advise caution with any orders using this email.

I feel like i havent even had a male victori for multiple molt cycles, so not sure if my memory is just that bad, or if she pulled off some sorta witchcraft, but i finally figured out where these slings that look like Psalmos were coming from…😅

One did a better job formatting, but i assume both are just scams. I get like a million these stupid time wasters, but not usually copy pasted back to back like this. 🤣

Just checked molts on 9 tarantulas. random species i’ve had for a while and just for whatever reasons hadn’t ever confirmed male/female for yet.

Determination:
7 females
1 Probable female
1 male

I haven’t ever attempted to make any kind of record to track, but i feel like my GENERAL experience with tarantulas has always been female heavy. Couple exception species, but in general, that’s how it feels.

I’ve also gotten a handful of collections over the years from people for various reasons, and there are inevitably a few miss*xed individuals in every collection, and it has always felt like there are more “males” that are actually females than the opposite. I have practically no meaningful evidence to back my theory, but i believe that keepers attempting to s*x their spiders much smaller than their skills and equipment allow for is likely a primary cause for this, and when i hear people say they only ever get males, i often wonder if their statement is true, or if they’re just miss*xing them all. 😅

What’s your experience? More ladies? More men? 50/50 split?
