A little update on the pony I posted a couple weeks ago! We’ve trimmed her 3x now and I’m happy to say her feet are growing out “normal” and she now loves to run like the wind ! Looking at her now you would never imagine the shape she was in just a few short weeks ago. She’s one lucky pony to live out her days with some of the most caring owners !

A cool case for your viewing pleasure. Make sure you get those babies checked, the sooner it’s caught the higher of chance that corrections can be made.

This c**t was presented at the clinic in April this year, at 5 months of age. He was severely club footed and unable to bear weight on the sole and was walking on the tip of the deformed dorsal hoof wall. Due to the severity and the duration of the clinical signs surgical correction was attempted. Our surgeon Dr Aswin Beck performed transection of the distal check ligament bit it did not result in sufficient extension, therefore the deep digital flexor tendons also needed transection. Along with surgery, this c**t had remedial farriery from master farrier Russell Williams (hoof extensions) and a long hospital stay at the clinic. These photos show a timeline of the case, with further information on each picture/stage. He has made a great recovery and is doing well.

Congenital flexural limb deformities are common in foals but can be treated much less invasively if medical intervention is commenced immediately. ie. with medication and splinting. It's a great idea to have your foals legs examined by a vet soon after birth.
