Hedgesville Hounds

Hedgesville Hounds www.hedgesvillehounds.com The Hedgesville Hound group is an all breed dog rescue that was formally established in 2003. Hedgesville Hounds exist everywhere.

We are a 501(c)(3) organization comprised of people who have several decades of combined experience and a general love for animals. Although there is a Hedgesville, and we have definitely placed a fair number of hounds in homes, the term Hedgesville Hounds has become more emblematic than actual. It has its origins in one specific rescue that became quite inspirational to a number of volunteers. It

has since captured in its scope the determination of many people with a common interest - dogs - and an uncommon commitment to helping them. What began as an effort to help a single group of dogs in terrible need, gained momentum as these dogs were successfully placed in wonderful homes. The dogs became a kind of rallying cry, a challenge, and a cause. They are dogs of every breed - every size - every age - who by circumstance, ignorance, or cruelty and neglect, were put at risk. Sometimes they are cats, and even rabbits. Our effort has been quite simple - to give them a voice. And a little help with arrangements. And then let these wonderful creatures do the rest.

Courtesy posting. Sweet Athena is looking for a new home:
This is Athena. We need to find her a forever home . She came to live with us when my Navy son couldn't take her with him to his new posting but cannot keep her long term. She is a 2 year old Pit Bull mix. She would be best as an only dog. She grew up with little boys and tolerated their play. I have never seen her aggressive to children but she doesn't do as well with other dogs. She barks and fusses when she meets new people, but once she gets to know you she is very affectionate and loyal. She loves squeaky toys and will play with them for hours. She grew up in a household with a fenced in yard so had never been on a leash until she came to live with us. The first time we took her for walks, she pulled so hard she about strangled herself, but as she went on further walks she settled down. She still wants to go after wildlife and will strain to go to other dogs or people on walks, but listens when told she can't 'go visit'. We are located in Inwood in Berkeley County WV. Please contact me at 304-261-3646 if you can help. Thank you

Please help us network Bubba. He is still available for adoption.

Bubba’s heartfelt desires are simple and basic. These are words that could pretty much be used to describe Bubba himself, and indeed, most hound dogs. If Bubba were a car, he would be a manual transmission, no computers, and bench seats.

Bubba craves love and closeness, a soft place to snuggle with his own treasured blanket, and a fenced yard where he can freely roam and amble about, secure in the knowledge that he is safely protected. And he needs the understanding that despite being a solid and sturdy dog whose breed is among the most stoic of all dog breeds, Bubba is a sensitive, vulnerable guy.

Bubba came to rescue care pretty well wrung out. His foster care providers recognized that he was on his last nerve and responded with immediate medical support, consistency, reassurance, and calm faith and belief in Bubba. Bubba has flourished in this atmosphere of love and, best of all, reflects these qualities that nourished him.

Bubba is a champion cuddler and loves to snuggle. His consummate skill at napping might initially alarm someone who is not used to this houndly talent, and fears that Bubba has expired. He loves to be under blankets, and he loves to create a nest from blankets. He would enjoy sleeping in the bed with his human(s), but will happily sleep in his crate.

Bubba’s house training is impeccable. He has mastered two important cues: “sit” and “crate”.

Bubba’s movement style seems at odds with his laconic (dare we say - lazy) personality. He appears to be prancing or trotting. He developed this gait out of painful necessity. He came to us with nails that had been quite neglected and grown far, far beyond their quicks.

Bubba is a straightforward and uncomplicated dog, and we feel that it is best that we follow his example. Here is what his interested adopters should be prepared to provide:

*Understanding and acceptance. Bubba still takes the medication that helped him manage his anxiety, and he may well always need to take it.

*He is a homebody. Bubba is a dog who revels in contentment and sameness. He is not a dog who would enjoy walks around town greeting new friends. In fact, he prefers slow introductions to new people from the safety of his crate. In 5 to 10 minutes, his curiosity overcomes his worry, and he has made a new friend.

*He is not a fan of car trips.

*He endures eye drops and wiping of his eyes, which crust up without care, with fortitude and grace.

*He will require professional nail trims.

*He will need a securely fenced yard in which he can exercise his body and his nose throughout the seasons.

What should his interested adopter(s) be prepared to expect?

*Eyes that look directly into yours with hope and longing and joyful expectancy, and absolute love and trust.

*A companion who will always be grateful for the smallest, simplest pleasures, and if peanut butter is among them, he will be in rapture.

*A dog who has earned this description from his foster mom: “He is loving and calm and the sweetest, most amazing dog.”

*A friend who will bond profoundly, and whose faith will never waver.

*A dog who has discovered that he is safe and valued, and does not take this wonder for granted.

Bubba is neutered and up to date on all vaccines and preventatives. We are seeking an adult home for Bubba, ideally. We will consider placement in a home with children 14 years of age or older. A securely fenced yard is a requirement.

**SENIOR** Huck (aka Huckleberry Hound) is everything a hound should be. Goofy, sniffy, sweet - he is always happy, and happy to share his day with you. We think he is 8 years old and around 60 pounds. He is easy in the house - very well behaved. Huck wants to be near his people. His foster tells us he spends most of his day sleeping but is ready for a walk every few hours and food whenever it is given to him. He LOVES going for walks. He doesn't pull hard (unless a silly squirrel lets him get close) but finds great joy in sniffing all the great smells. Don't you want a dose of enthusiasm in your day?

While waiting for his food to be put down his tail is constantly wiggling while he sits. He is generally quiet in the house unless he hears dogs in the neighborhood barking and wants to see why. He doesn’t seem interested in toys. He gets into his open crate on his own at bedtime and sleeps there all night with the door open. He is house-trained. He is good about not getting on the furniture and loves his cozy bed.

A good boy who loves to please, Huck will make a great companion for an individual or a family. With a loving person who will give him walks, guidance, and affection, he will be a faithful companion and best friend. Huck loves neck and belly rubs and ear scratches. He wants to connect with people, and he will appreciate the comforts of a home and a soft touch. Will you be the person who gives that gift to this deserving guy!?
