Sweet Mandy is being fostered by two of our wonderful volunteers, Marcie and Stan. Being fostered is helping Mandy immensely as she has a timid personality when meeting new people or first time experiences. Fostering for dogs with this temperament is particularly enriching. Mandy is starting to blossom! This lovely girl is 36 beautiful pounds, with a gentle face. She is house trained, crate trained and does beautifully on a leash! Mandy has an appointment to be spayed on Sept.10th, paid for by Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck Thank you, A.W.L! As much as Marcie and Stan love Mandy, she is in search of a forever home. When a dog in a foster is adopted it opens up a spot in foster for other dogs in need. Northumberland County Animal Shelter will be CLOSED for the Labor Day holiday, MONDAY, SEPT.1st We wish you all a happy and safe Labor Day.We hope you have a little time free to do something you enjoy. Be like Henry- take a nap in a hammock or Selene ( Rescue Dog Photography) and wear flowers and roll in the grass.😊 We wish you all some moments that bring you joy during this holiday.

We posted a few days ago with happy adoption updates, including Trinket, who had been at the shelter close to a year. We are over the moon about her adoption. Pictured is one of our wonderful volunteers, Cathy, saying a goodbye to Trinket. Cathy was a devoted advocate for Trinket, giving her one on one time, working with Trinket on skills and behavior, bringing her to events to be seen and socialized. This post is to acknowledge our manager, staff, volunteers and fosters. Each of them has been that special person with a deep connection to a shelter dog or cat to help enrich their lives and get them through the time while they wait for a forever home. We posted Henry just a few days ago. What is more fun than a kitten- two kittens! Twice the love and twice the joy to watch playing. Best friends Henry and Boba Fett are in search of a human love match! They are adorable fellows, each about 4 months old. Thank you to one of our wonderful volunteers for capturing this friendship in a photo. ❤️ Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck generously pays for the spay or neuter at local veterinarians. We will be delighted to introduce Henry and Boba Fett to you. Northumberland County Animal Shelter is open to meet our cats and dogs on Monday 11:00 to 3:00; Thursday 11:00 to 3:00 and Saturday 11:00 to 2:00. HAPPY UPDATE: Beauty, Floyd, Trinket, Cerella and Westley have each started a happy new chapter of their life! Heartfelt thanks to the adopters. We are deeply appreciative and wish you all lovely lives with your new companions. Floyd has gone to Cat Cove Inc. at Cove Many thanks Cat Cove! Westley has gone to Lab Rescue of Greater Richmond A huge thank you, Lab Rescue of Greater Richmond. Our shelter dogs and cats are spayed and neutered through the generosity of Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck Thank you, A.W.L For those reading, we are thrilled for all the adoptions from our shelter. We also encourage support, donations to and adoptions from the rescue groups that pull from us. Gentle, sweet Avril is looking for a home that is calm and can offer a quiet routine. Another dog in the home that has a happy temperament and can show Avril the joys of being a canine would be an added bonus! Avril is 6 months old and 39 ever so lovely pounds. She has been spayed through the generosity of Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck. Thank you A W.L ! Avril was adopted previously but it was not a good fit. Her previous adopters had young chidren and the kiddos' enthusiasm at having a pup, young excited voices and constant touching were overwhelming to Avril. Avril is timid with new people, but given time to warm up she is increasingly affection seeking. This cute girl enjoys being petted and held by her favorite humans and makes lots of eye contact. She has come to enjoy a leash walk but needs encouragement if it involves a new route. Avril is a kiddie pool fan, cooling off with abandon on hot days. She also seems to be very dog friendly. Full disclosure, Avril is a favorite of this writer so there is no shortage of accolades! This dear pup has so much love to give. We would be thrilled for her to find a forever home but also would be delighted for Avril to have the opportunity to be fostered.

ADOPTION ALUMNI UPDATE: Two of our N.C.A.S dogs, Basil and Bo, pictured on the left, were adopted ( together!) just before Christmas last year. They acquired a canine brother and sister. Here is a fun picture of Basil and Bo and their siblings waiting for their post dinner treat! Many, many thanks to the adopters for giving Basil and Bo such a delightful life.

A wonderful time was had by volunteers and the shelter canine and feline participants at Heathsville Farmers Market on Saturday. Everest did fabulously meeting people. Thank you to Jen E , one of Everest's dearest human friends, for escorting him on Saturday.Here Everest is meeting some wonderful kiddos. The Friends of the Northumberland County Animal Shelter (FNCAS) is a public nonprofit, all volunteer organization dedicated to the support of the Northumberland County Animal Shelter. With the FNCAS partnership, the Shelter has exceeded industry standards as a “no-kill” shelter with a live release rate of 96% in 2019. FNCAS is committed to supporting our county’s pets and enables the Shelter to provide a warm and safe place for wonderful animals until they find their forever homes.
