As of Wednesday, July 15, 2026, after being open a little over a year and three months, I have had the privilege of helping more than 475 families honor a beloved pet through Wright Pet Crematory.

As the sole operator of this extension of Wright Funeral Home & Crematory, reaching this milestone is more gratifying, fulfilling, and rewarding than I could have ever imagined.

Every family who has placed their trust in me has helped confirm something I believed from the very beginning: our area needed a more personal and dignified way to care for the animals who have become part of our families.

Truthfully, I probably had more faith in that need than the general public—and even more than the owners of the business, my parents, Natalie and Derek, did at first. I knew there were people throughout our community who loved their four-legged, winged, shelled, and occasionally less-conventional companions as deeply as they loved anyone in this world.

Sometimes, people will even admit that their bond with a pet is stronger than certain relationships they have with their own blood relatives.

As families began entrusting me with some of the most sacred souls they had ever known, I started quietly asking them to tell me about that bond.

I have listened to the older, gruff man who had not shed a tear in years struggle to remain standing as he brought me his best friend. I have met young couples bringing me the dog they raised together before they ever had children. I have cared for cats, birds, rabbits, reptiles, and other “different” pets whose importance could never be measured by their size, species, or the ability of others to understand their place within the family.

Although every story is different, their explanations usually arrive at the same truth: these sweet souls are among the most wonderful gifts God allows us to experience.

They may not be able to speak for themselves, but they can show a form of loyalty that words could never adequately convey. Even when they are sick, even when we are having a bad day, or even when they have gotten into some mischief while we were gone, they are still ready to become our shadow again at a moment’s notice. They trust us completely. They remain by our side without pride, resentment, conditions, or an expectation that we must first earn our way back into their good graces.

Their love is uncomplicated, but it is never insignificant.

Building Wright Pet Crematory has also given me access to the places my families trust most before they ever need my services: the veterinary practices from which I am frequently asked to make removals.

The relationships I have formed with local veterinarians and their staff members have given me a newfound appreciation for what they face every day. These doctors are regularly placed in difficult situations involving complicated medical decisions, limited resources, emotional families, and animals who cannot explain what they are feeling or advocate for themselves.

Every veterinarian I have personally worked with has demonstrated genuine concern for these animals, and I have witnessed many of them go above and beyond for the families we share.

The hardest part of their profession is not the families who consider their pets part of the household. It is the reality that not everyone sees animals the same way—and, at the end of the day, the measures of care provided must often depend upon the decisions made by an owner. That reality is especially difficult because the patient cannot speak up and ask for more time, another test, a second opinion, or additional treatment.

On top of that challenge, our area faces a shortage of small-animal clinics. From the outside looking in, that can occasionally make a practice appear overwhelmed or spread thin. Waiting rooms become crowded, phones ring constantly, emergencies arrive without warning, and staff members must balance the immediate needs of numerous patients.

However, a high-volume practice should not automatically be mistaken for an uncaring one.

I have visited lower-volume clinics that did not provide care as thorough as some of the busiest practices I work with. Personally, I am willing to wait in an office filled with puppies, cats, worried owners, and ringing telephones when that activity is simply physical evidence of how many people trust that doctor.

Medical emergencies will always require immediate attention, but I have full confidence in the staff members of our local veterinary practices to provide my families and their pets with the appropriate time, concern, and attention—as though the animal were one of their own.

This business has also allowed me to demonstrate to my father how dedicated I am to the funeral-service profession without having to follow his footsteps exactly.

I have always known that I did not want to assume the exact role he established through more than 25 years of consecutive service as Henry County Coroner. I will always be grateful for what the Coroner’s Office has provided my family. It helped put food on our table long before Wright Funeral Home was even an idea.

My position is different because I entered this profession with the privilege of knowing that Wright Funeral Home is here to stay. My father had already done the hardest part. He worked a full-time job, fulfilled the demands of the Coroner’s Office, and accepted trade-work contracts from funeral homes throughout the Wiregrass at all hours of the day and night. He worked tirelessly so his standards of care could eventually be recognized, trusted, and appreciated enough for Wright Funeral Home to become a reality.

Because he carried all of those baskets for so many years, I have the privilege of placing all of my eggs into this one.

Lately, I have jokingly—but sincerely—told people who know our family, “This is my Coroner’s Office.”

The comparison is not about the nature of the cases. It is about the responsibility, the unpredictable hours, and the obligation to respond when someone needs professional help.

Since opening Wright Pet Crematory, none of my responsibilities at Wright Funeral Home have been neglected. The public still sees me assisting with visitations, recording and streaming funeral services, helping families, and remaining in our on-call rotation for a full week every third week.

At the same time, the Pet Crematory phone can ring at any hour.

Sometimes it means meeting a family during the night to receive their 200-pound Great Dane of ten years. Other times, it means driving 30 minutes away because a family’s lizard deserves the same respectful care and attention as any other beloved companion entrusted to me.

Rain, shine, sleet, or snow, when our professional assistance is needed, we will be here.

Operating Wright Pet Crematory has shown me firsthand how difficult it must have been for my father to build the life my family has been blessed to live. It has also shown me how much effort it takes to sustain a business that supports not only its owners, but the devoted staff members who help Wright Funeral Home serve our community every day.

I now understand his sacrifices in a way I never could have without carrying a responsibility of my own.

To the more than 475 families who have trusted me: thank you. Thank you for allowing me into one of the most vulnerable moments of your life. Thank you for telling me their names, their habits, their favorite foods, their funniest stories, and the countless little details that made them uniquely yours. Thank you for trusting that they would be treated privately, individually, and with the dignity they deserved.

What began as an idea has become a calling that I take personally.

No beloved companion placed into my care is treated as “just an animal,” because I know that is never who they were to the person bringing them through my door.

They were family.

Toby Efurd
2010 – 2026

Toby Efurd, beloved companion of Kelli Efurd, crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2026 after 16 years of filling every room, campground, and sunny patch of grass with his unforgettable personality.

A Lhasa Apso/Shih Tzu mix with a big spirit wrapped in a small package, Toby was rescued by Kelli 15 years ago from a faraway land fondly remembered as “Craigslist.” From the very beginning, he was deeply loved—not only by Kelli, but also by the family she rescued him from, Matt and Kimberly Smith, with whom he remained close throughout his life.

Toby had a gift for making himself known. He was famously considered the nosiest neighbor at the campground, which was one of his very favorite places to be. Whether he was stretched flat on his belly soaking up the sun or keeping careful watch over everyone’s business, Toby made it clear that he was both present and in charge.

He never met a stranger. In order to be properly welcomed into Kelli’s home, new guests were required to give Toby mandatory pets. Anyone who stopped before Toby decided they were finished would receive a firm nudge until further notice. He had a way of making people feel chosen, even if that choice came with strict instructions.

Toby was also a talented little performer. He could sneeze on command for treats and, when he was especially in the mood to work for his reward, would occasionally stand on his back legs and spin. He packed more charm, sass, and personality into his little frame than most could ever hope to carry.

Toby leaves behind his loving mother, Kelli Efurd; his human brothers, Drew Woods and his wife, Gracie, and Whit Woods and Peyton; his fur brother, Hank; his grandmother, Joyce Efurd; and her fur son, “Uncle Ceasar.” He also leaves behind the many lives he touched with his nudges, sunbathing, campground supervision, and endless demand for affection.

The Efurd family would like to extend a special thank you to Wright Pet Crematory; Briar Creek Vet Clinic, especially Miss Emily and Miss Carla; and the biggest thank you to “Miss Brandi” Dutton, who always made sure Toby was groomed to his most dapper self for 15 years.

Though his paws were small, Toby’s presence was anything but. He will be remembered for his loyalty, his humor, his sunshine naps, his nosiness, and the way he made every person he met feel like they had been personally assigned to love him.

❤️🐾 Willow Smith 🐾❤️

March 2016-June 23 2026

With heavy hearts, the family of Willow announce her passing. Willow a beautiful wolf hybrid passed peacefully at home and went to be with Jesus after ten wonderful years of faithful companionship and devotion.

Willow was more than a dog—she was family, a loyal friend, and a constant source of comfort protection and joy. She filled her family’s days with unconditional love, unwavering devotion, and cherished memories. Whether she was watching over her family, enjoying a quiet moment nearby, or simply offering her gentle presence, Willow had a way of making every day steady and calm.

For ten years, she stood by her family’s side through life’s celebrations and challenges, loving them without reservation. She believed her mom’s human childeren were her children and she treated them as her own. She would protect her family at all cost and spent her last hours at her watch post watching her mom and her children tend to their garden and chickens.

Though our hearts ache in her absence, we find peace in knowing she is whole again, running free and watching over their middle child who is in heaven until they meet them both again.

Willow leaves behind a family who adored her and will miss her every single day. Her legacy of love, loyalty, and companionship will live on in the memories she created and the lives she touched.

And we know all good and well the first words she heard in heaven was
“Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
And that she was till she drew her final breath.

🐾💜Zena “Jean” Rodgers💜🐾

April 24, 2020 – June 20, 2026

With broken hearts and endless love, the family of Zena “Jean” Rodgers announce her passing on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in the comfort of her home and surrounded by the love that had been her constant throughout her six wonderful years.

Known affectionately as “Jean,” this beautiful Pit Bull proudly served as both protector and her mommy’s sweet bad dog. Fiercely loyal and overflowing with personality, Jean had a knack for keeping everyone on their toes while simultaneously filling their lives with laughter, companionship, and unconditional love.

Jean never turned down her favorite Nubs Bones treats and delighted in claiming just about anything she could fit into her mouth as a toy. She was especially fond of tucking away her prized possessions in her secret hiding spots, often leaving her family wondering what treasure might be discovered next. Her mischievous antics, expressive eyes, and loving heart made her one of a kind.

Above all else, Jean loved her guardian, Aliza Rodgers, whose devotion to her was evident in every moment they shared. Whether standing watch over her family, seeking affection, or simply being her wonderfully stubborn self, Jean lived a life rich in love and purpose.

Though her physical presence is deeply missed, the memories she created—the hidden toys, the happy moments shared over treats, and the unwavering protection she offered—will forever remain tucked safely away in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

The Rodgers family would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to Aliza and Jean’s TikTok family for the unwavering love, prayers, encouragement, and support shown throughout Jean’s journey. The countless messages, shared memories, and outpouring of compassion served as a tremendous comfort and a beautiful reminder of the community Jean touched with her sweet, mischievous spirit. The love shown for Jean will forever be treasured and remembered.

To know Jean was to know a dog who loved fiercely, protected faithfully, and somehow always managed to find a new place to hide something she wasn’t supposed to have. Her pawprints will remain on her family’s hearts forever. 🐾🤍

With loving hearts, the family of Daisy Tew announce her peaceful passing on Tuesday, June 17, 2026, in the comfort of her family’s arms at their home in Headland, Alabama. Born on June 23, 2012, in Dothan, Alabama, Daisy spent nearly fourteen wonderful years providing unwavering companionship, gentle affection, and countless treasured memories to those who loved her.

A beautiful Shepherd mix with a sweet and easygoing disposition, Daisy found happiness in life’s simplest pleasures. She was never one for toys, but she certainly never turned down a good meal or her favorite Dentastix treats. More than anything, Daisy adored being loved on. Whether receiving belly rubs, scratches, or simply resting beside her family, she was content anywhere she could feel the warmth of caring hands and the presence of those she cherished.

Daisy was deeply loved by her guardians, Riley, Sandy, and James Tew, and shared her home with her devoted fur siblings, Abby, Simon, and Lucy Tew. She leaves behind a family whose lives were enriched by her quiet loyalty, gentle spirit, and unconditional love.

The Tew family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate team at Walden Pond Animal Hospital for the exceptional care, kindness, and support shown to Daisy and her family throughout her journey.

Her pawprints remain forever imprinted upon the hearts of those who were blessed to call her family.

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” 🐾🤍

Cooper Heath Axtell

Cooper Heath Axtell, beloved Morkie and precious baby boy of Philip and Amber Axtell, crossed the Rainbow Bridge peacefully in the arms of his mommy and daddy on May 31, 2026. He was 13 years old.

Born on January 1, 2013, Cooper entered this world already carrying the kind of love that would one day become the center of a family. He was adopted by his loving daddy, Philip, who gifted him to his mommy, Amber. From the moment Cooper met his mommy at just three months old, with his special Duckie by his side, it was clear that God had created him especially for Amber and Philip.

Cooper was not just a dog. He was their baby, their companion, their comfort, and their constant source of unconditional love. Through every happy season and every hard one, Cooper was there, making life better simply by being present. He had the best personality — particular, stubborn, funny, loving, and wonderfully himself. He liked things exactly how he wanted them, exactly when he wanted them, and his family loved every bit of who he was.

Cooper loved his toys, but his Duckie was always special to him. He loved walks, car rides, belly rubs, ear scratches, Chick-fil-A nuggets, and getting treats from For Pet’s Sake — especially his favorite Yum Yum Sticks. He also had a special groomer, Brandy, who cared for him for most of his life and held a meaningful place in Cooper’s story.

He had countless little ways of filling a home with love. He would nudge open the bathroom door with his nose, huff and puff when he was not getting his way, and bark at the mailman as if it were his full-time job. When asked to “give love,” he would give a sweet nose kiss. If the belly rubs or ear scratches stopped too soon, he would gently paw until they started again.

One of the things his mommy will miss most is coming home from work and hearing Cooper “sing” as she walked through the door. It was his joyful way of saying he was happy she was home. No matter what kind of day it had been, that sound could make everything better.

Cooper did not let many people into his circle, but those he loved, he loved completely. He was Daddy’s buddy, but he was Mommy’s baby boy. He rested his head on his family whenever he could, and somehow, that always made everything feel okay.

The house is now much quieter without him. His family will miss hearing his paws down the hall, feeling him curled against their feet in bed, watching him push open doors, and seeing him beg for food in only the way Cooper could. A piece of their hearts went with him, and that piece can never truly be replaced.

Cooper is survived by his loving parents, Philip and Amber Axtell; his grandparents, MiMi and Poppie, Pop, Granddaddy and Julie; his uncles and aunts, Chance-Chance and Jojo, Michael, Branden and Stephanie, Daniel and Reagan; and his sweet cousins.

He was preceded in death by his Granny and Nanna.

Thank you, Cooper, for every tail wag, every nose kiss, every cuddle, every walk, every ride, every song, and every moment of unconditional love.

You were loved your whole life, and you will be missed for the rest of ours.

May 9, 2011 — May 20, 2026

With heavy hearts, the family of Audrie Agnew announce her passing on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Southern Oaks Veterinary Clinic in Dothan, Alabama. Born in Orange Park, Florida, Audrie spent 15 wonderful years filling the lives of those around her with love, laughter, and plenty of personality.

An Australian Shepherd through and through, Audrie proudly carried the title of “Princess.” She was always on the lookout for extra treats and never hesitated to sneak cookies from her brother, Bentley, whenever the opportunity arose. Peanut butter and pumpkin cookies were among her favorite indulgences, and her beloved toy, “Duck Duck,” rarely left her side.

Audrie found her greatest joy in the simple things — basking in the sunshine, stretching out for naps in the grass, and spending time with the family who adored her. Her sweet spirit, playful nature, and loyal companionship created countless cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

She leaves behind her loving guardians, Greg and Sherri Agnew, along with her brother, Bentley Agnew, all of Dothan, Alabama.

The Agnew family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Abby Long and the compassionate staff of Southern Oaks Veterinary Clinic for the loving care, kindness, and support shown to Audrie and her family throughout her illness.

Though Audrie’s pawprints may no longer grace the grass she loved so dearly, her memory will continue to warm the hearts of her family for years to come.

In Loving Memory of Willow “Wilbert” “Bean”

Willow, lovingly known as “Wilbert” and “Bean,” a devoted Pit Mix, passed away on April 1, 2026, at the age of 14. Born in July of 2012, Bean lived a life full of loyalty, comfort, and plenty of laughter for those who knew her best.

She was the cherished companion of her owner, Maegan Hearndon, and a steady, loving presence in the life of her daughter, Lola. Bean was the kind of dog whose loyalty ran deep—she didn’t just love her family, she needed to be near them. Rarely more than a step away, she made it her life’s mission to stay close, offering quiet companionship and unconditional affection every single day.

Bean had a personality that was as easygoing as it was memorable. She wasn’t one to fuss over toys—she preferred the simple pleasures: a good butt scratch, lounging near her people, and, of course, enjoying any treat she could get her paws on. Known for her love of food, it’s safe to say she “never met a snack she didn’t like,” and pup cups were among her absolute favorites.

Her family will always remember her for her gentle spirit, her constant presence, and the comfort she brought just by being there. Bean didn’t need grand gestures to show her love—she showed it in quiet moments, in closeness, and in the unwavering bond she shared with those she loved most.

Though she may be gone from sight, the imprint she left on her family’s hearts will remain forever.

A Look at Our Urn Options & What Comes Standard

We’ve had a few questions lately regarding urns and what families receive when choosing Wright Pet Crematory, so I wanted to take a moment to provide some clarity.

At the center of this photo is the standard urn provided with every private cremation we perform. This is the same style urn used by Wright Funeral Home for our human families. We often refer to it as a temporary urn, but many families choose to keep it permanently—and that is perfectly okay.

Unlike some pet crematories that offer communal (mass) cremation to reduce overhead and increase volume, every pet entrusted to us is cremated individually. That commitment to private care is where our focus remains—from start to finish.

That said, we do offer a selection of urns for families who wish to personalize their pet’s final resting place:

https://www.pageturnpro.com/Crescent-Memorial/49392-The-Crescent-Pet-Collection/0/mindex.html

• The wooden urns pictured behind the standard urn are our most cost-efficient upgrade options, starting at $50, and allow for a favorite photo to be displayed on the front
• Many urns can be custom engraved for an additional $40 using our in-house order process
• All merchandise is sourced through the same trusted supplier used by Wright Funeral Home—ensuring a higher level of quality and consistency

You may notice the bulldog displayed in the photo—that is a custom piece made by Petsies, a small business I’ve partnered with. They specialize in creating lifelike plush replicas of your pet based on photos you provide.

These aren’t generic stuffed animals—they are carefully designed to match your pet’s:
• Coat pattern & markings
• Eye color and expression
• Body shape and proportions

For families who want something even more personal, Petsies offers the option to include a discreet internal pouch, allowing a small portion of cremated remains to be placed inside—creating a truly meaningful keepsake that feels close in a different way than a traditional urn.

Whether your pet has passed or is still with you, these can be made at any time and have become a very special option for families looking for something unique and comforting.

While similar-looking urns may be found online, the difference in craftsmanship and material quality is noticeable when compared to what we provide.

Most importantly—there is absolutely no obligation to purchase an urn from us.
Families are welcome to:
• Use the standard urn provided
• Bring a container from home
• Purchase an urn from a third party (including Amazon or custom makers)

If you choose to bring your own urn, we will respectfully handle the transfer of your pet’s cremated remains with proper authorization using our third-party release process .

Our goal has always been simple:
To provide the same dignity, care, and respect to your pets as we do for every family served by Wright Funeral Home.

For those with any questions—about urns, keepsakes, or options like Petsies—I’m always happy to walk you through what feels right for your family.
