Summer is here, and while we enjoy the sunshine, our pets can quickly become overheated. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate veterinary care.

🚨 Signs your pet may be overheating:
• Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
• Drooling more than normal
• Bright red or pale gums
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Stumbling or collapse
• Confusion or unresponsiveness

🐶 If you suspect heat stroke:
✅ Move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately.
✅ Offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water.
✅ Place cool, wet towels on the paws, belly, and neck, or use a fan to help lower body temperature.

❌ Do NOT use ice or ice water, as it can slow cooling and worsen the situation.

☎️ Call Animal Hospital of North Alabama immediately. Even if your pet seems to recover, heat stroke can cause serious damage to the internal organs that isn't always visible right away.

💙 Prevention is the best medicine:
• Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.
• Walk dogs during the cooler morning or evening hours.
• Always provide fresh water and shade.
• Avoid hot pavement that can burn paw pads.

The Fourth of July is a fun celebration for people…but for many pets, it's one of the most stressful days of the year. Loud fireworks can cause fear, panic, and even lead pets to escape from their homes or yards.

Here are a few ways to help keep your pet safe and calm:

🐶 Keep pets indoors before fireworks begin. Close windows, draw the curtains, and play calming music or turn on the TV to help mask the noise.

🏷️ Check ID tags and microchip information. Fireworks are one of the busiest times of the year for lost pets. Make sure your contact information is current in case your pet gets loose.

🦴 Create a safe space with their favorite bed, blanket, or toys where they can feel secure.

🚫 Leave pets at home. Even well behaved pets can become frightened by unexpected loud noises and crowds.
