Sorry for the delay in posting.

On July 18 and 19, Starfish hosted a Hip to Snip Clinic in Hazard Kentucky. We were able to fix 24 larger dogs and 39 cats. We have been receiving grant monies for these clinics since 2023 but have not received grant funding in 2026 yet (we are hopeful) - these low cost, life changing clinics are so important to the animals AND the community in SE Kentucky. We were able to host this clinic solely because of the generosity of Cheri Lee (Starfish adopter, volunteer and high school classmate of the founder) and Mary Beth T (who, coincidentally was the preceptor of the founder in 1985). This clinic was the last clinic for our vet tech Makayla Lowe - Sikes as she leaves to attend veterinary school. Boy, will we miss her. Special thanks to Loree Martin for donating her vet skills as well.

As of this weekend, Starfish has transported over 1830 dogs and over 300 cats to our Midwest rescue network since January 1. Many of the dogs we fixed had puppies that were sent to rescue.

We are doing all we can think of to help. If you would consider donating to this campaign we would be grateful. Extra extra thanks if you sign up to donate monthly. Link is in comments if you can help.

Just wanted to update you on Hip to Snip Clinics - we did not get any 2026 grant monies yet so we are having to fundraise for clinics. Typically we do not post clinics - we go to the emails and then text people that have a pet we have a spot for.

We do have some spots for larger male dogs (at least 30 lbs) and male cats. We will text you typically from a 312 area code to schedule. If you do not respond, we go to the next person. We will do a few waitlisted animals as well if we can.

Please email [email protected]
Need:
Pet name
Your name
Dog or cat
Weight on dog
Boy or girl
CELLPHONE!!!
County

It’s $20 per cat, $25 per dog. Includes vaccines.

If you have larger male dog or male cat - please put that in subject - makes it easier to schedule.

We are doing the best we can.

We are losing our vet tech because she is starting school to be a vet! Congratulations Makayla! We need a vet tech for our Hip to Snip clinics. We fix quite a few larger dogs so must be able to lift them. It is in Hazard KY, only on weekends, it is a paid position. Please send your resume to [email protected]. Please but vet tech in subject line. Hope to hear from you.

We were in Hazard this last weekend doing our first Hip to Snip weekend in 2026 - our first since November 2025. We needed to be in compliance with the new veterinary rules re spay/neuter clinics and by the time we were, there was no grant funding available to us currently. The clinic was donated entirely by Starfish Animal Rescue.

Much thanks to the HTS core team and the other volunteers, the veterinary team, the set up and breakdown team, the staff at the armory and Ben whose skills were legendary. We also had some help from 2 local vets which allowed the clinic to proceed. We very much appreciate it.

We fixed 30 female cats and dogs and 21 male cats and dogs. We appreciate your patience - there are thousands of animals in need unfortunately. There was some late messaging re scheduling - we also coordinated a rescue transport that weekend so it was very chaotic. So some of the communications were late at night. Sorry.

To apply - email [email protected] We need your name, pet name, cat or dog, boy or girl. If dog, need weight. Only Perry, Breathitt, Knott and Letcher counties please. MUST PUT A CELL NUMBER since we contact you via cell. Many people did not email any contact info so they could not be scheduled.

Cost is $20 per cat (including vaccines) and $25 per dog (including vaccines). Priority to dogs 35 lbs and larger. We can’t do small dogs at this time bc we are so behind with larger dogs. Small dogs, if brought in, will need to be postponed. We are doing our absolute best to help.
