Heiko Bleher (1944โ€“2025)

Heiko Bleher, explorer, ichthyologist, author, and photographer, passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 80. Known internationally for his lifelong pursuit of aquatic discovery, Heiko introduced countless species to science and to the aquarium hobby, leaving an indelible mark on both.

Born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, on October 18, 1944, Heiko grew up in a family immersed in natural history. From an early age he accompanied his family on collecting trips, sparking a passion for aquatic life that would define his career.

Across more than six decades, Heiko Bleher traveled extensively in South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, documenting fishes and aquatic plants from some of the most remote waters on Earth. Many species were introduced to aquarists through his efforts, and numerous taxa were later named in his honor. These include Hemigrammus bleheri, the well-known rummy-nose tetra; Channa bleheri, the rainbow snakehead; Chilatherina bleheri, a rainbowfish from New Guinea; Kiunga bleheri, a striking blue-eye; and Phenacogrammus bleheri, an African tetra. His name was also commemorated at a higher taxonomic rank with the description of the genus Bleheratherina and the subfamily Bleheratherininae.

Heikoโ€™s work reached far beyond the field. He was a prolific writer and photographer, contributing hundreds of articles to aquarium publications worldwide. He had a long and close relationship with Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine, where his writing and photography introduced readers to habitats and species they might never otherwise encounter.

Heiko Bleherโ€™s legacy will endure in the species that bear his name, the countless introductions he made to the aquarium community, and the enduring fascination with aquatic life that he championed. His work ensured that aquarists everywhere could glimpse the extraordinary diversity of the worldโ€™s rivers and lakes.

Dr. Paul V. Loiselle, 1945โ€“2025

We were saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Paul Loiselle, who passed away in his home in New York. He was a towering figure in both the aquarium hobby and the scientific world, and yet he was always remarkably approachableโ€”a man with a sharp wit, a deep love of fish, and a gift for making complex ideas accessible to anyone who shared his passion.

Paul served for many years as the curator of freshwater fishes at the New York Aquarium, and was a lifelong advocate for the conservation of freshwater species, particularly in Madagascar, where he helped bring attention to the plight of endangered endemic fish. He discovered and described numerous species during his fieldwork and was honored with several named after himโ€”a quiet testament to the depth of his contributions to ichthyology. The American Cichlid Association named the Paul V. Loiselle Conservation Fund in his honor.

Though best known for his work with cichlids, Paulโ€™s interests ranged broadlyโ€”including rainbowfish, killifish, and more. His deep knowledge and boundless enthusiasm made him a friend and mentor to generations of aquarists, friendships that included other giants in the aquarium hobby, such as Wayne Leibel (pictured here), George Barlow, and more. For many, he was the voice of reason, always ready to offer insight, encouragement, or a well delivered joke.

He had strong opinionsโ€”especially about scientific names and how they ought to be pronouncedโ€”no matter how everyone else on Earth said it. But, that same precision and conviction fueled his dedication to the hobby and to the fish he loved.

More than anything, Paul was a storyteller. Whether he was presenting at a conference, chatting with hobbyists, or writing for an aquarium magazine, he had a way of weaving together humor, science, and deep personal experience. He leaves behind a legacy not just of academic work and conservation victories, but of friendships, mentorships, and a better-informed, more thoughtful aquarium community.

He will be deeply missed.
