“Why can’t you just hire someone?”
-An Explanation Because I Keep Getting Asked 😜
Because I would have to drastically slow down my pace to nitpick a newbie’s every move. This means higher prices to offset lower numbers of dogs.
Because I don’t want to pay someone’s medical bills when they get bit, and oh boy, they will get bit MANY times. I don’t want to pay for someone else’s chiropractor appointments from lifting dogs; God forbid they fall and seriously injure themselves since most dogs can’t walk politely on leash. This means higher prices to offset medical costs.
Because I don’t want to witness any of my dogs I care for get cut by a newbie (it’s a s**tty thing but it happens, animals move, you can’t control everything), but if someone under me does it, it’s my fault and I like to be responsible for my own mess-ups, not anyone else’s. This means higher prices to offset vet costs. Also how would you feel if I just moved your dogs to a trainee? Probably kinda weird since you bring them for my work. Plus those are MY dogs when they are here. Selfish me.
Because I speak bluntly so there’s no confusion on my expectations if I’m paying someone to do a job. Turns out I’m not user friendly 😂
Because I can’t wrap my head around paying someone to have me teach them. They should be paying me for my knowledge. None of this makes sense to me.
Because once I share all my tricks and tips and dog handling/behavioral/protocol/people communication shenanigans, that person could take everything I’ve worked for and walk away and start their own business. They didn’t earn that knowledge, I did.
Because I get s**t on, pi**ed on, a**l glands in my face and hair, my ribcage bruised up from dogs climbing me like a pole, back issues from holding/lifting 200lbs dogs up who should be closer to 100lbs, hair slivers that turn into infections, glorious arthritis in my knees and hands. It’s not a good selling point is it?
Because humans are hard, especially when you talk to them about their dogs. They just are. It’s no one’s fault, it’s just hard to separate emotion and business when dealing with someone’s pet.
You also haven’t heard the total lack of understanding until you’ve heard non-animal people s**t talk humans who choose to take care of animals in any capacity. Holy smokes, it’s disgusting.
Because the chance of me convincing a groomer with similar skills to move to Hays is pretty much 0%. 🫠
This is also me reiterating that if I WANTED to quit, I would. My relationships with the dogs and owners are what keep me here. I have boundaries established with the dogs, I just have to apply to humans.
Please, don’t assume you know how someone else’s business works or how their mind works. I’m invested in both you and your dog, and managing those relationships can be exhausting.
I love my job, I love what I’ve built, I love my ability to problem solve and make people and pets happy and the above should tell you exactly how much I love it because it can break a person.
AND yes, that’s me and one of my grooms when I was a Baby Groomer 😂. Had to go digging for that pic.
