My name is Lita Long,
My journey in the world of dogs began at a very young age when I attended my first dog show at just three years old. Over the decades, I have honed my skills to train every breed imaginable, from towering Great Danes to tiny Chihuahuas. In my experience, being a successful dog trainer today goes far beyond a mere love for dogs; it requires a multifaceted approach that involves being an educator, a mentor, and a psychologist for both dogs and their human companions. The ability to think outside the box and to observe and interpret the unique personalities and environments of my clients is essential to my training philosophy.
Training dogs is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor; it is an art that evolves with each new challenge. I have immersed myself in this philosophy throughout my life, taking on diverse roles as a dog owner, breeder, mentor, groomer, and, of course, trainer. My first significant canine relationship was with a spirited Pekingese named SimSam, who was my first obedience dog in 4-H. SimSam taught me invaluable lessons about communication and understanding the nuances of canine behavior, which laid the foundation for my future career.
My family's legacy in dog breeding is rich and dynamic. We have been passionate about breeding various breeds since before my birth, starting with Boston Terriers and Pekingese before moving on to German Shorthaired Pointers. In 1963, we introduced the Old English Sheepdog (OES) into our breeding program, and now we are proud to say we have reached our 15th generation, successfully achieving over 400 titles under the prestigious prefix "Blue Panda." Each title represents not just the success of an individual dog, but also the culmination of dedication and expertise cultivated over many years.
Throughout my more than six decades in this field, I have bred a wide array of breeds including OES, Wirehaired Pointing Griffons, Papillons, French Bulldogs, Rottweilers, and Cane Corsos. I approach dog training with a clear and strategic mindset, always asking my clients, "What specific goals do you envision for you and your dog in the next six months?" This forward-thinking approach helps shape our training sessions and aligns them with the desired outcomes for a well-mannered pet.
My teaching methodology is designed to build skills incrementally and effectively. I employ a straightforward doctrine: demonstrate what you want from your dog, train the specific behaviors, and embody the actions you wish to instill. I utilize a variety of training tools that are suited to the age and behavior of each dog, starting simply and gradually increasing complexity. Understanding and utilizing proper body language is a key component of effective training; it's a communication tool that fosters a deeper bond between the dog and handler.
Recognizing that each dog learns uniquely, I take the time to identify opportunities that highlight and promote their individual strengths. Training is not confined to structured sessions; it's about seizing those brief, fleeting moments throughout your day that present themselves as training opportunities. My motto is: "See the moment. Train the moment."
I am excited to partner with individuals associated with Guardian Angel, where we provide a nurturing and high-quality canine education experience for anyone eager to elevate their K9 teamwork.
Throughout my career, I have not only earned numerous titles on my own dogs, but I have also guided students in achieving their own AKC titles, extending all the way to the prestigious Utility Dog level. Although I prefer not to boast, I take particular pride in the accomplishments of a Wire Fox Terrier named "Maggie," who proudly earned her UD title under my guidance.
I have had the privilege of working with a diverse array of breeds at all stages of life, affirming my belief that an older dog is never too old to learn new skills. From teaching new tricks to refining habits, my ultimate goal is to make life more enjoyable for both dogs and their owners.
With extensive experience in obedience, rally, herding, hunting, flyball, tracking, agility, and more, I am eager to help you and your dog develop the strongest bond possible and become an outstanding team.
