My name is Tonya Burnett, and I’m a Certified Veterinary Technician. I was born in Germany and grew up as a military brat, eventually serving in the military myself. While stationed in Colorado Springs, I discovered my passion for veterinary medicine and graduated from vet tech school there.

Over the years, I’ve worked in general practice, mixed practice, and emergency medicine, and each one has shaped the way I care for animals. I love helping pets feel safe, whether they’re coming in for a routine visit or facing something more serious. I have a soft spot for neonatal and special‑needs patients, and I enjoy building trust with both pets and their families.

At home, I’m surrounded by family and a lively bunch of dogs and cats who keep life fun and full. I’m excited to be part of the Town and Country Animal Hospital team and to help care for the pets in our community.

Ashton grew up in Arkansas before moving to Mississippi a few years ago. She is currently pursuing admission to veterinary school and is passionate about providing compassionate care to every patient as if they were her own. She brings experience working with a variety of species and is excited to continue learning in a clinical setting! 🩺

At home, Ashton is a proud cat mom to Autumn, her 16-year-old feline companion. When she’s not caring for animals, she enjoys baking and crafting. We’re so excited to have Ashton join our team—help us give her a warm Town & Country welcome! 💙🐾

🌱 Dog Health Deep Dive: Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?
Is it normal… or a sign something is wrong?

If your dog eats grass, you’re not alone in wondering: “Should I be worried?” The answer is… sometimes. 🐶🌱

The good news? Grass eating is a very common behavior in dogs, and most of the time it is not a problem. Many healthy dogs occasionally graze on grass without any underlying illness.

But let’s clear up some common myths.

🌱 Myth #1: “Dogs eat grass because they know they’re sick.”

This is one of the biggest misconceptions.

While some dogs with stomach upset may eat grass, research does not show that dogs are intentionally using grass as a way to “treat” themselves. Many dogs simply enjoy the taste, texture, or habit of grazing.

🤢 Myth #2: “If my dog eats grass, they must have an upset stomach.”

Not necessarily.

Some dogs vomit after eating grass, but many do not. In fact, most grass-eating dogs are not sick before or after they eat it.

🐾 Why do dogs eat grass?

Common reasons include:

🌿 They like the taste or texture
🧠 Boredom or curiosity
🐺 Natural instinct inherited from wild ancestors
🍽️ Seeking extra fiber in their diet
😌 A learned behavior that gets attention

🚩 When can grass eating be a concern?

Grass itself usually isn’t the issue—the reason behind it may be.

Call your veterinarian if grass eating is accompanied by:

⚠️ Frequent vomiting
⚠️ Diarrhea
⚠️ Loss of appetite
⚠️ Weight loss
⚠️ Lethargy
⚠️ Signs of abdominal pain
⚠️ Sudden increase in grazing behavior

A dog who suddenly starts obsessively eating grass may be trying to tell you something has changed.

🌱 How can you keep grass eating safe?

✅ Avoid areas treated with pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers
✅ Prevent access to plants that may be toxic
✅ Keep your dog on parasite prevention
✅ Make sure they have a balanced diet with appropriate fiber
✅ Pay attention to changes in their normal behavior

The bottom line 🐶

A few bites of grass from a healthy dog who is otherwise acting normal? Usually not a reason to panic.

But changes in frequency, urgency, or behavior around grass eating deserve attention.
