Why do we require e-collars after spay/neuter surgeries?

The plastic collars used in veterinary care have adopted many silly names such as cone of shame, pet lampshade, or radar dish. But did you know the actual name is an Elizabethan Collar (or e-collar for short), so named after the high-necked ruff collars worn in Elizabethan-era England? These cones are used to prevent your pet from biting or licking at any wounds or injuries as they heal.

Here at the Healthy Pet Clinic, we most commonly use e-collars for pets recovering from a spay or neuter surgery to prevent your pet from licking or chewing at the incision site, which can lead to infection or reopening of the incision. E-collars are just $12 for dogs and $15 for cats, and while your pet may not enjoy their time resembling a household light fixture, it's all for their own good! Just ask Nugget, recently adopted from Southern Pines Animal Shelter, who modeled the e-collar for our clinic and wore it like a pro. 💕

For kitties, we also recommend Bitter Apple Spray (which can be picked up at most pet retailers) and is applied around the incision site to discourage licking and chewing.

As summer winds down and we inch toward fall, it’s a great time to check in on our senior pets, just like our smiling and oh-so-handsome friend, River, who recently visited us for a checkup and vaccines.

Mississippi humidity doesn’t just weigh on us, it can make aging joints even stiffer and more uncomfortable for our older dogs and cats. If your senior pet is moving a little slower these days, it might not just be age. Many pets are experts at hiding discomfort or adjusting gradually, so signs of pain often go unnoticed.

A few simple ways to keep your senior comfy:
✔️ Soft, supportive bedding
✔️ Pet stairs or ramps for couches and beds
✔️ Gentle daily exercise
✔️ Vet-approved pain management options

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, so we’re getting a head start by reminding you that aging doesn’t have to mean aching. There are safe, effective ways to help your pet feel good for as long as possible, and we’re here to help make that happen.

We are certainly no strangers to heat advisories this summer and with yet another advisory in place, it’s a good time for a friendly reminder about some serious summer safety tips for our pets.

The inside of a parked car can heat up way quicker than we think. On an 85° day, temps inside the car can pass 100° in just 10 minutes, even with the windows cracked. After 30 minutes, it can push close to 120°. That kind of heat can turn deadly fast.

Our pets don’t cool down the way we do. They rely on panting, and once the air around them gets too hot, it’s tough for their bodies to catch up. If you’re heading somewhere they can’t come with you, the safest thing is to leave them home where it’s cool and comfy. Even a quick errand can often take longer than we plan, and a little extra care can go a long way.

Also important? Protecting those paws. If the pavement’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet. Early morning or evening walks are best, and grassy areas are even better.
And don’t forget hydration! Make sure your pet has access to fresh, clean water, especially after walks or time outdoors.

Let’s look out for each other and keep our pets cool, hydrated, and safe during this excessive summer heat.🌞🐾

If enthusiasm had whiskers, it would look a lot like Link.

This goofy, high-energy kitten has only been with his new family for a few days, but he’s already making himself right at home, and keeping his two older feline sisters on their toes. When he’s not busy begging them to play, he’s flopping over for belly rubs or kneading biscuits like it’s his full-time job.

His mom told us, “At first I was nervous taking him in for his shots, since I’m unsure of his temperament at the vet, but everyone being so friendly made the experience great! He’s definitely not shy when it comes to making new friends. Thanks for making the trip awesome!”

We loved meeting this little social butterfly and can’t wait to see him again.

Did you know that today is National Black Cat Appreciation Day?

There’s just something undeniably special about a black cat, and no one proves that better than the one and only Tinsel, a certified snuggle expert, cheese enthusiast, and proud “parrot cat” (because shoulders are clearly the best seat in the house).

Tinsel recently visited us for her vaccines, but today, she’s here to help us celebrate our midnight-colored feline friends. She sticks her tongue out when she sleeps (yes, it’s adorable), loves her plush lamby like a best friend, and gives the kind of cuddles that could melt the coldest heart. ✨

🐾 Got a black cat who owns your heart? Show them off in the comments! We’d love to see them and celebrate what makes them purrfectly unique.

A microchip is only as powerful as the info behind it, and National Check the Chip Day is the perfect reminder to make sure yours is up to date.

Microchips can help reunite lost pets with their families, but only if your contact details are current. Moved recently? Changed phone numbers? Take five minutes today to double-check your pet’s chip registration info. It could make all the difference one day.

💡 Quick Tip: A microchip doesn’t replace an ID tag. Both work best together!

Whether your furry friend is an indoor cuddle bug or an outdoor explorer, being prepared brings peace of mind.

Let’s give our pets every chance to find their way home. 💕

Is your pet in need of a microchip? We offer low-cost microchips for $20, and registration and upkeep are free! Book a wellness appointment now at sopineshealthypets.org.

Our Story

The Southern Pines Animal Shelter Board of Directors recognized the need for a systematic approach to reducing the number of unwanted animals in the Pine Belt area. In mid 2008, the Spay & Neuter planning team was formed. This committee was charged with researching proven methods for reducing the number of unwanted animals in other areas of the United States and making recommendations regarding those methods that would be most appropriate for the Pine Belt area.

The formation of the Spay & Neuter Clinic was determined to be the best approach to reducing euthanasia and intake at the Shelter. The gold standard for high-volume spay/neuter clinics - developed by the Humane Alliance of North Carolina - was utilized in designing a clinic that would model the best approaches for health services provided.

In July of 2009, the clinic opened its doors to the public. Southern Pines Spay & Neuter Clinic offers high-quality, low-cost sterilization surgeries for cats and dogs with help from grants and donors, and basic health services are also available for pet owners in the area. With our highly-trained veterinary staff, the Clinic has spayed or neutered over 65,000 companion animals to date.
