Uterine prolapses = Lights and sirens emergency

If only we actually had lights and sirens.
In large animal veterinary medicine, a handful of things are considered drop everything and go, and uterine prolapses are one of them.

Uterine prolapses in cattle tend to happen for a few reason such as trauma to the birth canal, hypocalcemia, and most commonly, very large calves.
Once the uterus is back in, the horns are everted properly, a “purse string” stitch is placed to help hold everything where it needs to be. If caught soon enough, the cows can recover and go on to raise their calf.

Unlike vaginal or re**al prolapses, there’s no reason to cull a cow because of a uterine prolapse. Vaginal and re**al will continue to happen, uterine are more of a “not their fault” instance.
We always suggest leaving the cow where she is or getting her to the closest small pen and calling us immediately. We prefer them not to be hauled in so there’s less of a a chance of damage to the uterus.

Vaginal prolapses *sigh*

Vaginal prolapses tend to happen when a cow feels the need to strain, whether pre or post calving. This can result with part of her vaginal wall being on the outside (as show here). They’re usually about the size of a volleyball and a pinkish color.
If caught soon enough, these typically go back in fairly easily. It’s no emergency by any means but should get to us in the same day you see it. The sooner the better.

Usually a quick epidural block and an umbilical tape suture, and she’s free to go. Depending on her closeness to calving a “blowout” stitch can be placed to help hold everything in, but still allow her to calve when the time is right.
