Dr. Apache has some information that he is eager to share! 🩺🔬

Did you know that you can obtain an Ingham County Dog License at Haslett Animal Hospital!

In Michigan, all dogs over 4 months old are required to have a current license and a valid rabies vaccination. Having a dog license registered in your county helps others identify your dog and ensures they can be returned safely to you if they get lost!

To get your dog licensed, make sure they have an up-to-date rabies vaccination.

Additional Details
- The profits from purchasing Ingham County dog licenses support Ingham Animal Control rather than local city budgets.
- Lost license tags can be replaced at the Ingham County Treasurer's Office by presenting the original license and a sworn statement

IMPORTANT: Please note that we can only accept cash payments for Ingham County dog licenses.

Keep your furry friend safe and compliant—stop by Haslett Animal Hospital today! 🐾♥️

Preparing for a visit to the dog park is essential for ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and your dog. By following key guidelines, you can promote good behavior and facilitate positive interactions with other dogs and their owners. Below are important considerations to keep in mind before and during your visit.

Before You Go:
1. Health and Vaccinations:
Ensure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and free from illness.

2. Identification:
Verify that your dog wears a collar with an updated license and identification tag.

3. Leash:
Keep a leash accessible, even in off-leash areas, to maintain control or remove your dog from any situations.

4. Essentials:
Pack necessary items, including water, a bowl, treats, p**p bags, and towels.

5. Observe:
Before entering, take a moment to observe the dog park for safety and compatibility with your dog’s temperament.

6. Consider Small Dogs:
If applicable, utilize designated small dog areas to prevent your dog from being overwhelmed by larger breeds.

At the Dog Park:
1. Leash Entry:
Use the first gate to enter and ensure your dog is leashed until you assess the situation inside.

By following these guidelines, you can enhance your dog park experience, ensuring a safe and enjoyable outing for both you and your dog. Remember, responsible preparation and attentiveness contribute to a positive environment for all.

March Pet Poison Awareness ✨🦮🐈✨

March is National Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month, a crucial reminder for pet owners to be vigilant about potential poisons that can harm their beloved animals. Pet poisoning is a leading cause of emergency veterinary visits, but it is also one of the most preventable issues.

Creating a comprehensive list of toxic substances specific to different types of pets can be an invaluable resource for pet owners. Here are some common toxins categorized by pet type that you might consider including on your refrigerator list:

* For Dogs:🦮🐾
- Chocolate: Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizures.
- Grapes and Raisins: Can lead to kidney failure.
- Onions and Garlic: Can cause gastrointestinal upset and damage to red blood cells.
- Xylitol: Found in sugar-free products, it can lead to insulin release and liver failure.
- Macadamia Nuts: Can cause weakness, tremors, and hyperthermia.

* For Cats:🐈🐾
- Onions and Garlic: Similar to dogs, these can be harmful.
- Lilies: Highly toxic and can cause kidney failure.
- Citrus Fruits: Can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
- Chocolate: Also toxic to cats, though they are less likely to eat it.

* General Household Items: 💊 🦠
- Cleaning Products: Many are toxic if ingested or inhaled.
- Human Medications: Such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be fatal.
- Pesticides and Herbicides: Can be harmful if ingested or absorbed through the skin.

* WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PET EATS SOMETHING POISONOUS

If you suspect that your pet has ingested something toxic, here are the steps you should follow:

1. Contact the ASPCA Pet Poison Hotline: The Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) is available 24/7 throughout the year and can provide you with essential guidance during an emergency. You can reach them at (888) 426-4435. While there is a fee for their service, it may be more cost-effective than an unnecessary trip to the vet.

2. Follow their Guidance: If the APCC recommends taking your pet to a veterinarian or if you are certain that your pet has ingested a toxic substance, seek veterinary care immediately.

3. Veterinary Care: Your veterinarian will be equipped to take immediate measures to prevent the absorption of the toxic substance and monitor your pet for any signs of toxicity.

By taking the time to educate yourself about potential pet poisons and knowing what steps to take in case of an emergency, you can help ensure the health and safety of your furry friends.

Leptospirosis - Lepto Vaccine 💉🦠✨

Did you know that Leptospirosis is a zoonotic bacterial infection caused by the Leptospira bacteria.

** Zoonotic refers to diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. It's a fascinating aspect of animal health that highlights the connections between wildlife, domestic animals, and us! 🦠✨**

Infection: Dogs can become infected through exposure to contaminated water, soil, or by coming into contact with the urine of infected animals, such as rodents, raccoons, and other wildlife. It's important for dog owners to be aware of the risks, especially in areas where leptospirosis is more prevalent, and to consider vaccination as a preventive measure.

Symptoms: In dogs, it can lead to a range of symptoms, including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and muscle pain. The infection can be particularly severe and can affect the kidneys and liver.

** Vomiting in dogs can be caused by a variety of issues, and not all of them are related to Leptospirosis. While Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial infection that can cause vomiting among other symptoms, there are many other potential causes for vomiting in a dog. 🐕 **

If a dog shows signs of illness, especially after being in potentially contaminated environments, it's crucial to seek veterinary care promptly. 👩‍⚕️🦮✨

As Kimber and Gibby delight in playing in the snow, they would like to impart valuable advice:

- When utilizing salt on driveways and sidewalks, ensure it is pet-safe; if uncertain, clean your dog's paws between walks.
- Prolonged exposure to temperatures below 20 degrees necessitates paw protection for dogs, such as booties or paw wax; it is highly recommended that short-coated breeds wear coats for added protection.
- Despite cold temperatures, homes can still harbor pests and parasites; year-round prevention measures will minimize disease exposure.

Please remain warm and safe during your daily activities while the snow falls! Visit our location to obtain preventative measures to protect your furry friends too!
