Due to the COVID-19 pandemic I will not be taking in blankets at this time. The public health risk is too great to you and my family. I wish you all peace and health during this unprecedented time. -Heather

This sounds pretty good to me!

When I Am An Old Horsewoman
I shall wear turquoise and diamonds,
And a straw hat that doesn’t suit me
And I shall spend my social security on
white wine and carrots,
And sit in my alleyway of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.
I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night
And ride the old bay gelding,
Across the moonstruck meadow
If my old bones will allow
And when people come to call, I will smile and nod
As I walk past the gardens to the barn
and show instead the flowers growing
inside stalls fresh-lined with straw.
I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair
as if it were a jewel
And I will be an embarrassment to ALL
Who will not yet have found the peace in being free
to have a horse as a best friend
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am old.

Flood watch #25 this year! Nuts! Many of you have sheets or more on tonight. Temps in my area are 50s and 60s. Keep in mind non-clipped horses may sweat in this weather and the breathability of your turnouts will be tested. Slide a hand under around the withers and shoulders to see if your horse is sweaty. Even if your horses’ turnout is waterproof treated it doesn’t mean your horses’ sweat will escape through the membrane making the horse wet. The membrane is applied at manufacturing and deteriorates over time. It can not be reapplied. Sweaty horses chill quickly.

Pockets of flooding are likely and there is a risk of downed trees and power outages.

I get asked about reproofing Barbour jackets often. The process is different than reproofing horse blankets, although the care and attention is the same. Send it off to the professionals, I did for mine and it was was totally worth it.

Insulin resistant horses can benefit from blanketing when temps drop below 45 degrees to avoid cold stress.

It happens every winter. A horse that may not even have a prior history of laminitis is found to be very lame and reluctant to move. It’s more than the typical hesitation horses show on hard, frozen ground. Looks like laminitis but the feet aren’t hot. What’s going on? Cold-induced hoof pain s...

Whew, what a season! A wet spring made for a very interesting July-September blanket cleaning season. What is usually spread over 6 months was jammed into 3 months. We made it! If you dropped off in October you will be getting your blankets back very soon. For those of you who haven't dropped off yet, there is still time but hurry so your horses aren't left out in the rain so to speak.
