PSA: The porcupines are out and about!
Here are the main things we wish everyone knew about Porcupines.
If you are here to leaf peep: we have porcupines in Maine!
Porcupines will not run away from your dog!
They are most active at dawn and dusk.
They do not care about fences and will climb over them!
Check for porcupines in your yard before going for that last walk before bed time.
Do not cut the quills! This makes it HARDER to remove!
Quills have barbs so they will keep migrating in the direction they are stuck.
Quills in the abdomen or chest are emergencies.
Dogs will not "learn" so do not assume that they won't go after another porcupine.
Sedation is likely required to remove quills in most pets.
