One thing I’ve realized over the years is that reptiles were never really just about reptiles for me.
A lot of people probably assume this is mostly business for me now because of how much I talk about breeding, projects, ROI, and long-term strategy. This was a hobby long before it became a business for me, and I think that’s a big reason why I still genuinely enjoy it.
I wake up around 4 every morning and some of my favorite hours of the day are downstairs with the animals before the rest of the world wakes up. Cleaning cages, checking water, feeding, observing little changes. At this point it’s repetitive enough that I don’t even really think about the physical work anymore. It gives me time to think clearly and honestly brings a level of peace that’s hard to explain unless you keep reptiles yourself.
What’s interesting is that the more successful this has become as a business, the more careful I’ve had to be protecting the part of it that I actually enjoy. I’ve had opportunities to scale this much larger, but I also know that if this ever became ONLY business and stopped being something I genuinely enjoyed, eventually the business side starts influencing decisions in ways that are not always best for the animals.
At the end of the day, these are still living animals first.
I think a lot of people rush into reptiles trying to become breeders or businesses before they even slow down enough to enjoy the hobby itself. Ironically, the people who genuinely love the animals and the process are usually the ones who last the longest anyway.
That’s probably not talked about enough in this hobby.
If you enjoy these kinds of conversations beyond just “look at this snake,” that’s a lot of what I share on my Patreon.
