With the latest additions to our breeding program as well as future plans, we have decided on a name change from Dark Holler Shepherds to Dark Holler Working Dogs. With such, we have also slightly changed our logo! Tell us what you think in the comments!

What do we feed and recommend?

Well, this can change sometimes as dog food companies make changes to their food and/or costs. Recently we changed from feeding Iams to our dogs to Diamond Naturals! We switched for a couple of reasons.

The first reason being that the quality of Iams dog food ingredients has declined recently. Diamond Naturals ingredient list is AMAZING! In my opinion, you can't get much better of an ingredients list.

The second reason for the switch is that the cost of Iams has steadily increased. Diamond Naturals has kept the ingredients great and the cost great as well. The Diamond Naturals bags are also 10 lbs more than Iams was. So we are getting better quality food for cheaper price plus in a higher quantity! I would highly encourage everyone to check this food out if you are in the market to switch. 🖤

Happy 11th Birthday to the bestest boy ever, Iron z Vodnanske Doliny! He spent his birthday with a much needed pampering with a good bath, ear cleaning, and brushing (as you can tell in the last picture). Its very much shedding season!

Who am I kidding? Its shedding season 365 days a year with a German Shepherd!

In a 2020 study done on Golden Retrievers, it was discovered that the heritability of temperament (fear and aggression) is up to 80%! To put that into perspective, the heritability of hip dysplasia is only 20-40%. That's why breeders have a very difficult job of ensuring that we are picking and pairing the absolute best parent dogs. Training is important for temperament, but breeders have to be able to evaluate the temperament and what is genetics vs what is a result of training.
