Yesterday, our staff had a first-hand look at the damage heartworms can cause during a necropsy/autopsy consented to by an owner. This is why it is important to keep your dogs and cats on prevention ALL year around.

Once an infected mosquito bites your dog or cat, it takes approximately 6 months for larvae to develop into mature heartworms. Once mature, heartworms can live 5-7 years in dogs and 2-3 years in cats. Due to the longevity of these worms, each season can lead to an ever increasing number of worms in the heart (American Heartworm Society, 2026).

All it takes is 1 mosquito bite.

Please give your pets prevention once a month. Yearly testing is strongly recommended by our veterinarians.
A lifetime of prevention is much cheaper and safer than going through heartworm treatment.
