Susie is at home and resting on painkillers and antibiotics. Bryson, our male Large Munsterlander, seems to think it is his personal task to stand guard over her and keeps giving me the stink-eye if I approach as if I were the cause behind her pain. He cries if I put him back in the crate….this breed forms strong attachments. Here is to hoping that hard lesson is enough for Susie to avoid porcupines in the future!

It was a terrible night here at Sable Point Kennels….11:30pm-2:00am pulling more quills out of a dog than I have ever thought possible. Susie somehow thought it necessary to go out and retrieve a porcupine straight to our back porch on her last night potty break before bedtime. Bryson came back with his tail between his legs and I knew something was up. Thank God Stella also came back quickly sans porcupine quills. This girl thought she was top huntress bringing me that awful critter. Of course, hubby was gone on military drill weekend. Also (thank God) I have a genuine friend in my Fire Chief whom wasn’t even irritated on the late night call to assist in holding a light while Ayla (our 13yr-old daughter) held Susie’s head and I used the needle-nose pliers to pull all those irritating quills out of Susie’s mouth. One good dog bath to get rid of all the caked on mud that Susie ran though, rinse off all the blood that came from quill pulling, and a thorough search for more quills….and both Ayla and Susie are now snuggled up on the couch sleeping so that Ayla didn’t wake up her brothers going back to bed at this late hour. 🥱

At the end of this past week, we had a routine ultrasound done to check for pregnancy on Susie, and it unfortunately came back negative for puppies despite our best efforts. All applicant puppy families have been notified, and Enzo (the sire) will have his semen analyzed April 9th. If that analysis comes back good, we will make another attempt in August when Susie’s next cycle is expected. If it doesn’t, we will once again begin interviews for a different sire. Sometimes, the best laid plans….well…don’t always happen. For now, we still have a very happy and healthy Susie.

Susie found a willing ‘victim’ for a fetching game in our 9yr-old son Leo (whom has Down’s Syndrome). She adores him as he will play fetch with her for long periods of time when the rest of us have had enough. 😂

Is there a downside to LMs?! Well, yes, yes…..there is one very distinct ‘downside.’ 😬

I took the dogs on a walk before the incoming storm on the acreage behind our home (had a couple ruffed grouse flush too!), and Susie comes back meekly heeling at my side having found stickers. Solid matted in stickers across the whole backside of her head and shoulders 🤦‍♀️

Well, there is nothing like making a su***de run from West Michigan to Eastern Pennsylvania yesterday afternoon two hours after getting results! This girl went from a 1.4 Progesterone level on Friday to a 9.8 by late morning yesterday. Susie had a good tie with Feather Cloud’s AC Enzo this morning, meaning if all goes well that puppies will be due on/around April 28th and ready for homes mid-June! We are still building our waitlist, so please get in touch to fill out an application if you are interested in a Large Munsterlander puppy from our ‘D’ litter!

For Anni
(My Best Friend)
You came to us on four soft feet,
but filled the house like a heartbeat,
tail thumping joy into the floor,
eyes always counting heads,
making sure your people were all there.

You ran fields the way some pray,
nose to wind,
muscle and instinct and grace,
an upland song written in motion.
Birds rose, shots echoed,
and you came back proud,
because coming back was always the point.

You loved children like they were yours,
stood watch like it was a sacred job.
First to the window,
first to the driveway,
first to say, I’ve got this.

You chased squirrels without apology,
and peace without effort.
If laughter broke out, you were there.
If tears fell, you were closer.
Your place was never far from us,
because love, to you,
meant near.

Now you run where fields never end,
where every scent is new,
every morning is bright,
and nothing hurts anymore.

We will feel the quiet you leave behind,
but we will hear you in it too,
in the rustle of grass,
the echo of paws in memory,
the way love stays
even when bodies cannot.

Run free, sweet Anni.
Thank you for choosing us.
Thank you for everything. 🐾🌈

Yesterday, we had to make the decision that none of us ever wanted to make…to say goodbye to our gentle princess and the foundation for our kennel. Willow Hills Anniken will always be one of those irreplaceable family members, and our hearts are beyond broken. Every image, every memory, every moment knowing she is no longer with us brings an instant flood of tears. You were SO loved, and 9.5yrs was not nearly enough time. 💔💔💔
