Update on the thoroughbred mare in for training-
This sweet girl was dropped off for training several months back and we started bringing her into work, getting her used to pleasure riding. She ended up turning up lame after just a couple weeks of being in light work.
We took her to the vet for a lameness eval and unfortunately radiographs showed that she had an old sesamoid bone fracture, most likely from being on the track and aggravated it coming back into work. The doctor gave us a poor prognosis most likely being able to be used for light riding at the walk or not at all if corrective shoeing didn’t work.
Luckily, she has wonderful parents and they looked for a second opinion. They reached out to Ohio state and they said that they could remove the fractured part- a procedure that they have done lots of times with success rates high for athletic recovery.
After she received the surgery, she came back to our barn for her first couple months of recovery for wrap changes, wound care, stall rest, and the beginning stages of hand-walking. Her wound healed beautifully and she is now continuing her healing at a barn closer to her parents, so that they can finish her hand walking and small turn-out portion of her healing process.
I’m so glad that her parents will be able to eventually enjoy her and that she has a full life ahead of her. ❤️
