Meet Lola! This sweet girl was recently spayed, and her family went the extra mile by also having her microchipped; an amazing decision that could one day save her life.

A microchip is a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, that’s implanted just under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades. It can be placed during a spay/neuter procedure or at a regular wellness visit. The process is quick (similar to a vaccination) with just a brief pinch and maybe a little soreness afterward.

Once implanted, the microchip stays in place for life. It holds a unique ID number linked to your contact information in a secure national database. If your pet is ever lost and brought to a vet or shelter, they can scan the chip and contact you right away. And if you move or change your phone number, no problem; you can easily update your info online without needing a new chip.

Whether you have a curious cat who might dart out the door or a dog who gets spooked by fireworks, microchipping offers peace of mind and a reliable way to bring them back home. No matter the species or breed, microchipping is one simple step that can make a world of difference.

Meet Adonis! This adorable guy recently had a dental procedure after his vet discovered signs of dental disease. While he wasn’t showing any obvious signs of discomfort, Adonis had several teeth in the early stages of tooth resorption, a painful condition where the body starts to break down and reabsorb the structure of the tooth. Tooth resorption can be very uncomfortable, even if pets don’t show it outwardly.

As a result, Adonis had three affected teeth extracted. Thankfully, his recovery has been smooth! His family shares, “Adonis is doing very well post-visit! He seems to have adjusted just fine to having some teeth removed, as his appetite hasn’t changed much at all!”

This is a great reminder of why annual exams are so important. Even without visible symptoms, your vet can catch underlying dental issues early and help keep your pet feeling their best.

Meet Mirah! About a month ago, this sweet girl came in for her vaccines and a spay procedure. Spaying female dogs and cats isn’t just about preventing litters; it also helps protect against serious health conditions like pyometra (a potentially life-threatening uterine infection) and certain cancers, making it one of the most important steps you can take for your pet’s long-term health.

Mom says, "She’s doing absolutely great and healed perfectly. We’re incredibly grateful for the care and attention your team gave her — it truly made all the difference. Some of the nurses clearly left a big impression on her (and on us!)" Yay, Mirah!

Mirah’s family went above and beyond by making an incredibly generous donation to support future pets in need of medical care. If you’d like to contribute and help make a difference too, visit: https://anicira.org/donate-va/

Say hello to Cricket! This beautiful girl stole the hearts of our team when she came in several weeks ago for her spay surgery. Spaying your female pets is a key part of responsible pet ownership; it not only helps prevent overpopulation, but also significantly reduces the risk of certain cancers and completely eliminates the chance of a life-threatening uterine infection called pyometra.

Cricket’s mom shared, “Cricket is doing great! She really is just the sweetest girl 🥰. Thank you for taking such great care of her.”

We’re so happy to hear she’s doing well, and we want to send a big thank-you to her mom for trusting us with her care. Cricket truly was a joy to have in the clinic, and we’re thrilled to know she’s back home being her sweet self!

Meet Roscoe (now named Ozzie): a once-stray cat whose story is all heart. 🐾

Roscoe was first spotted behind DaVita Kidney Care in Harrisonburg thin, covered in sores, and with worsening eye infections. But what stood out most? His sweet, talkative nature. He’d sit at the picnic table during staff lunches and meow as team members were coming and going, just hoping for attention.

Despite his obvious discomfort, Roscoe greeted everyone with affection. And the DaVita team — true to their nature — didn’t turn away. They brought him inside, gave him food, toys, and a blanket, and let him rest in an office. One teammate even took him home overnight until he could be seen at Anicira the next morning, for neuter surgery, vaccinations, and care for his infected eyes and blistered paws.

Even more inspiring? This wasn’t just a kind gesture by one person. The whole DaVita team came together to pool and donate their own money to help share in his care. That spirit of compassion led to a full recovery and, ultimately, a forever home with one of the very first teammates who advocated for him.

Now Ozzie (formerly known as Roscoe) is thriving and living the good life with his new family and cat brother, and we couldn't be happier about this outcome for all involved! This is what happens when good people come together for those who can’t speak for themselves.

To the DaVita team: thank you! As part of the medical community, you're natural caretakers, and your compassion perfectly reflects the values we hold at Anicira -- that every animal deserves a chance at health, safety, and love. Now Ozzie is one more life you've helped heal and protect, and we were honored to play a part in his new beginning.

Saving one cat's life might not change the world, but it certainly changed Ozzie's world forever. 😻

Meet Letty Mae! A few months ago, her loving family noticed a mass that began growing quickly. Concerned, they did exactly what every pet parent should do; they brought her in for an exam. The veterinarian recommended surgical removal, and thanks to their swift action, the mass was successfully removed.

Letty’s mom shared, “Letty is doing very well,” and we’re overjoyed to hear she’s healing beautifully!

If you ever notice a lump or bump on your pet, keep a close eye on it; especially if it grows rapidly, changes in shape or texture, or fluctuates in size. Masses that get larger and then shrink may seem less concerning, but they can still signal an underlying issue and should always be evaluated by a veterinarian. Early detection and intervention can make all the difference.

A huge round of applause to Letty Mae’s incredible family; not only for taking such quick action, but for the love, commitment, and care they gave her during her recovery. Letty is one lucky pup to be surrounded by so much compassion!

Meet Maxine (wait, scratch that, meet Max!) This spunky little kitten came to us a few weeks ago for two big procedures: a spay and a leg amputation due to a birth defect. Maxine was full of sass, charm, and attitude…and, as it turns out, not actually a girl! After a thorough exam by our veterinary team, Maxine was officially renamed Max.

So, Max was neutered instead of spayed, and his leg amputation went smoothly. Despite it all, he handled everything like a tiny, three-legged champ.

His amazing family has been by his side every step of the way, nursing him back to health with so much love and care. His mom shared, “He’s doing so well. Thank you all for taking such good care of him.”

We’re so grateful to Max’s family for their devotion and sense of humor, and Max, we think you wear your new name (and your new look) perfectly!

July 22 is AAHA-Accredited Hospital Day!

Being AAHA-accredited means we hold ourselves to the highest level of care, not just once, but every single day.
At Anicira, we’re proud to be part of a select group—just 15% of veterinary hospitals in North America—that have earned accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA).

This accreditation isn’t required—it’s something we choose to pursue because your pet deserves the very best. To earn and maintain this status, we undergo rigorous evaluations on over 900 standards of veterinary care, from patient safety and pain management to surgery, cleanliness, and client communication.

Being AAHA-accredited means we hold ourselves to the highest level of care—not just once, but every single day.

Choosing an AAHA-accredited hospital gives you confidence that your pet is receiving care from a compassionate, skilled, and deeply committed team. Join us in celebration today, and thank you for trusting us to help your pets live happier and healthier lives!

Every month, the Anicira Pet Food Pantry helps feed hundreds of pets whose families are facing tough times. And behind every bag of food is a community that shows up — again and again.

Twice each month, our dedicated team and volunteers unload thousands of pounds of donated food from the Walmart Distribution Center — often in the blazing heat, like yesterday. This month, we were especially moved by extra acts of generosity: Tractor Supply in Harrisonburg donated 500 pounds of food, and Anicira team members from our Manassas hospital sent personal donations to help Harrisonburg pets in need.

We are grateful for all this generous support! And thanks to these efforts, we’re getting ready to serve even more families at our next Pet Food Pantry on July 26.

Want to make a difference in your community? By volunteering, you’ll make a lasting impact — supporting Anicira's nonprofit mission and helping your neighbors keep their pets happier and healthier. New Pet Food Pantry volunteers are always welcome!

From the bottom of our hearts (and paws): thank you for always showing up for our community's animals. ❤️🐾
