In simple terms: OPU (aspiration) means O**m Pick-Up — a procedure where oocytes (eggs) are collected directly from the mare’s ovaries using ultrasound-guided aspiration.

In equine reproduction, OPU allows veterinarians to retrieve oocytes from developing follicles without waiting for natural ovulation. A transvaginal ultrasound probe is used to locate the ovaries, and a fine needle is guided into the follicles to gently aspirate the fluid containing the oocytes.

Once collected, these oocytes are taken into the laboratory where they are matured and then fertilized using ICSI (Intracytoplasmic S***m Injection). From there, embryos are cultured and prepared for transfer or cryopreservation.

OPU is especially valuable for mares that are young, older, subfertile, or in performance training, since it does not require breeding or interrupt their workload. It also allows repeated collections throughout the breeding season, increasing the number of embryos that can be produced from a single mare.
