🦇 There’s something your veterinarian wishes you knew about rabies. And it’s more important than ever.

We’re sharing this article because finding a bat in your home can have some pretty significant consequences, even when no obvious bite or injury has occurred.

But there’s a bigger conversation we want to have about rabies, and why keeping your pets vaccinated is so incredibly important.

Here’s what we wish every pet owner knew:

🐾 Rabies remains a very real public health threat. Rabies continues to be detected in wildlife, and recent increases in certain areas are raising concerns for public health officials. As our communities grow and development brings people, pets, and wildlife into closer contact, opportunities for exposure become increasingly important to recognize.

🦝 Your pet doesn’t have to encounter a visibly sick animal to be at risk. Bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes are important rabies carriers in the United States. Even an encounter with an unfamiliar or stray dog or cat can raise concerns when that animal’s health and vaccination history cannot be verified. Rabies is primarily transmitted through infected saliva, usually by a bite, but certain scratches and other exposures can also pose a risk.

💉 Vaccination can make an enormous difference in what happens after an exposure. When a pet that’s current on its rabies vaccination encounters a potentially rabid animal, the recommended response generally involves prompt veterinary evaluation, a rabies booster, and a period of observation.

For pets that have never been vaccinated, the situation can be heartbreaking.

Depending on the circumstances, public health recommendations may include strict, lengthy quarantine or even euthanasia. Pets with overdue vaccinations require individual evaluation, and their prior vaccination history can make a significant difference in how an exposure is managed.

These are incredibly difficult conversations to have with families who love their pets. And they’re conversations we would much rather prevent.

❤️ Rabies vaccination is about so much more than checking a box. It protects your pet, helps protect your family, and reduces the risk of devastating outcomes following a potential exposure. It can also help prevent unnecessary human post-exposure treatments and the emotional and financial burden that accompanies these situations.

Rabies vaccines are exceptionally safe, highly effective, and one of the most important preventive measures we have in veterinary medicine.

We also want to remind our community to avoid handling unfamiliar animals, including stray pets and wildlife, regardless of how friendly or healthy they may appear. If you suspect an exposure, contact your veterinarian or local public health department promptly.

🎃🐾 Happy, Happy Halloween from all of us at Harrison Animal Hospital! 🧡👻

We hope everyone has a wonderful Halloween filled with lots of fun, laughter, and maybe a few too many sweet treats! 🍬

Before the festivities get into full swing, we wanted to share a few friendly reminders to help keep our four-legged family members safe tonight!

🐾 Give them a little peace and quiet!
Between the doorbells, costumes, trick-or-treaters, and all the excitement, Halloween can be a LOT for our pets. Make sure they have a nice, quiet, safe place to relax and get away from all the commotion. If your pets are hanging out outside with you, just keep an eye on how they’re handling all the extra activity. Some love the attention, and others would much rather be curled up on the couch!

🏷️ Make sure they have identification!
With all the coming and going, it’s especially important to make sure your pet’s microchip information is up to date and they have identification on their collar. And here’s a little tip we love: in a pinch, writing your name and phone number on a piece of duct tape and sticking it to their collar works great! It doesn’t have to be fancy to make a big difference if someone gets loose.

🍫 Keep those sweet treats out of reach!
We all know our dogs have a special talent for finding the things they shouldn’t! Between the kids’ candy bags, bowls of chocolate, and all those delicious snacks around the campfire, there are plenty of opportunities for curious noses to get into trouble. Chocolate, xylitol (found in some sugar-free treats), and even candy wrappers can be dangerous for pets. So let’s keep the candy for the humans and make sure those goodies are safely tucked away!

If your pet gets into candy or anything else you’re worried about, we highly recommend contacting Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 or visiting www.petpoisonhelpline.com. Their wonderful team of veterinary professionals is available 24/7 and has incredible resources to help determine what steps to take next. A consultation fee applies. Don’t wait for symptoms to develop if you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic!

Most of all, we hope everyone has a safe, fun, and memorable Halloween! Enjoy the costumes, the candy, the campfires, and all those adorable little trick-or-treaters! 🎃🧡

Definition: A four-legged lifesaver who always shows up, gives her best, and quite literally gives a little of herself to help dogs in need. ❤️

Jolene is one of our amazing canine blood donors! And while she may or may not require more blankets, snuggles, and attention afterward than the patient actually receiving the transfusion, we happily oblige. 😂

She’s a true MVP, and we’re so grateful for her!

Not all heroes wear capes. Some just demand extra blankets. ❤️
