Some Sunday R and R. Watch my horse melt into his red-light session.

Red-light therapy works great on joints. Whether they are arthritic, stiff from working, or recovering from an injury. This noninvasive therapy is great at reducing inflammation and kickstarting cellular repair in muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments.

Optimal results are seen if done for 10-20 minutes 3-5 times a week depending on the reason for the session.

The vet I work for part time has brought an interesting case my way.
This sweet mare has EPM and is on a closely monitored veterinary rehab plan. As always her quality of life is our top priority and she is currently on medication for EPM and her condition has improved immensely since she arrived.

Due to her EPM she presented with muscle wasting on her left masseter muscle and I have been able to start red light therapy to help repair the muscle, reduce inflammation, and alleviate stress that can be seen in horses with chronic illnesses.

ā€¼ļøThis is not a cure by any means , it’s meant to supplement her veterinary care and give her the best outcome possibleā€¼ļø

When applying kinesiology tape it’s also important to know the flow of the lymphatic system not just the muscles in order to help the horse efficiently and effectively. After discussing this topic with clients and colleagues I figured I’d extend the concept here.

Honestly this is probably one of the biggest compliments I could ever receive from a massage. I’ve never had a horse roll for me mid massage and Kyle is usually never the type to do so on a normal day. After he was done with his little roll he just stood there and let me continue while he napped.

Putting in the work, one massage at a time.
Recently I’ve been adding the Masterson’s method into my work and so far has been a great addition to my sessions.
Out of what I’ve read and have implemented so far the Masteron’s method allows the horse to have a say and be more involved in their own sessions. This involves stretches and learning to pause and take a step back sometimes to allow the horse to regulate themselves. Patience is always key and sometimes less is more.
A big thank you to this client for the photos :)

Kyle is a very expressive horse and is my perfect personal demo horse for showing the stages of a release from start to finish.
Signs of a release in tension include:
- Licking/Chewing/ yawning
-Lip twitching
-Lowering of the head and neck
-Slow blinks
-Big sighs/ deep breaths
-Relaxing the hind leg of the side I’m working on.
-Leaning into me while working on an area

Knowing these signs no matter how little or large help me know if I’m working towards tension relief. Most of the time I will be looking at the horse’s head during a session and not my hands for this reason.

The Sacroiliac joint or SI for short is located where the pelvis is connected to the spine. Even though this joint is low in movement it acts as a stabilizer and shock absorber. This joint sits under the gluteal muscles.

Taping this joint decompress the area and improves stability through posture changes. The ā€œstarā€ method helps support the surrounding muscles as well and increases blood flow to the area.
