When transporting horses across state lines or attending shows and events, proper documentation is required by law. This typically includes a negative Coggins test (EIA) and a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (Health Certificate).

Requirements can vary by state, so it is important to verify the specific regulations for your destination before traveling!

• Coggins tests are generally valid for 12 months
• Health certificates are typically valid for 30 days (depending on destination and current disease conditions)

Health certificates and Coggins documentation are now processed electronically, allowing secure sharing between veterinarians, laboratories, and state officials while improving accuracy and turnaround time.

At DLAC, we process Coggins testing in our approved in-house laboratory and expedite electronic health certificate documentation for our clients.

Management of internal parasites is an important part of maintaining horse health. Common equine parasites include ascarids, strongyles, tapeworms, and bots, all of which can negatively impact digestion, growth, and overall well-being if not properly managed.

A f***l egg count (FEC) is a simple diagnostic test that involves microscopic examination of a fresh manure sample to determine which parasites are present and in what numbers. Results are reported as eggs per gram (EPG) of manure, providing a quantitative assessment rather than a simple positive or negative result.

F***l egg counts allow veterinarians to identify horses with higher parasite shedding and to recommend targeted deworming, rather than routine or unnecessary treatments. This approach helps avoid over-treatment, reduces the cost of parasite control, and plays a critical role in slowing the development of anthelmintic resistance, which is an increasing concern in equine medicine.

At Dakota Large Animal Clinic, we recommend f***l egg counts as part of a responsible parasite management program. In adult horses, FEC testing is typically performed in the spring and fall, with additional testing as needed. Treating horses based on f***l egg count results helps ensure that only affected horses are dewormed, preserving drug effectiveness and supporting long-term herd health.

If you have questions about f***l egg counts or parasite control for your horse, please contact Dakota Large Animal Clinic at (605) 338-5558 or [email protected]

Dental health is an important part of your pet’s overall well-being. Dental disease is one of the most common health conditions in dogs and cats, and it often develops without obvious signs in the early stages.

Professional dental cleanings in dogs and cats are performed under general anesthesia. Anesthesia allows for a thorough and safe oral examination, complete cleaning above and below the gumline, dental radiographs when indicated, and appropriate treatment while minimizing stress and discomfort for your pet.

Without proper dental care, plaque and tartar buildup can lead to bad breath, gum disease, tooth loss, oral pain, and infection, which may also affect overall health if left untreated.

At Dakota Large Animal Clinic, we offer dental evaluations and professional cleanings for small animals, including dogs and cats, as part of comprehensive preventive care.

To schedule a dental exam or cleaning, please contact Dakota Large Animal Clinic at (605) 338-5558.

This time of year is an ideal opportunity to schedule a dental exam and floating for your horse before training and riding programs begin. Routine dental care plays an important role in comfort, performance, and long-term health.

Because horses’ teeth grow continuously throughout life, annual or semi-annual dental evaluations are essential. Floating removes sharp enamel points and addresses abnormalities such as hooks and uneven wear that can cause oral pain, difficulty chewing, weight loss, and resistance under saddle. These problems often go unnoticed but can significantly affect digestion, response to the bit, performance, training, and overall quality of life.

With proper dental care, horses today are living well into their 30s and beyond, maintaining better body condition and comfort as they age. Regular dental evaluations support longevity and help keep horses healthy and comfortable throughout their lives.

At Dakota Large Animal Clinic, we provide dental evaluations and floating as part of comprehensive preventive care.

After birth, foals rely entirely on antibodies absorbed from colostrum for immune protection. Because foals are born without circulating antibodies, adequate passive transfer during the first hours of life is critical to their health and survival.

IgG testing using RID (Radial Immunodiffusion) is considered the gold standard for measuring serum IgG levels in foals. While rapid screening tests such as SNAP can provide quick initial information, they report results in broad ranges. RID testing provides an exact quantitative IgG value, allowing for more accurate interpretation and clinical decision-making.

At Dakota Large Animal Clinic, we prioritize diagnostic accuracy and reliable results. For this reason, we utilize IgG RID testing, which offers high accuracy, definitive quantitative results, and precise documentation of immune status. When IgG levels are low, timely intervention, such as plasma transfusion, can be recommended to provide the foal with the antibodies needed for protection.

If you have questions about IgG testing, passive transfer, or newborn foal care, please contact Dakota Large Animal Clinic at (605) 338-5558 or [email protected]

During foaling season, we see an increased number of critically ill newborn foals. In this period, conditions such as diarrhea and dehydration can become life-threatening very quickly. What may initially appear mild can progress to severe illness in a matter of hours.

Newborn foals can deteriorate rapidly due to fluid loss, electrolyte imbalances, and infection. Waiting to see if a foal “improves on its own” can significantly reduce the chances of a successful outcome.

If your foal shows signs of diarrhea, weakness, lethargy, dehydration, or is not nursing normally, call the clinic immediately. During foaling season, every minute matters, and early veterinary intervention can make the difference between life and death.

If you are concerned about your foal, please contact Dakota Large Animal Clinic right away at (605) 338-5558 or [email protected]
