Update: “Rogue” the tortoise has been found, he is healthy and home after a grand adventure from S. Dilworth across the Arroyo River.

Wonder where he thought he was going? Stinker!

This tortoise escaped after the high winds on Saturday… several fence panels fell down.

Please help us find him. The family has a ATVs traveling the canals, but they’re afraid it’s finding a needle in a haystack. This is where the Village comes in…. Find this boy! 🙏

We live in the birding capital of the Northern Hemisphere — 📍 Harlingen, TX.

We endured a big tropical storm this morning and there was a tornado that touchdown just a few miles from us. We had no damage and tonight the birds are singing.

Johnny literally just said… “I can’t believe nobody wants this button eyed boy!” 🥹

Arlo does have special needs (Megaesophogas) and with a modified eating plan, he’s easy peasy.

Reach out if his eyes get you like they do us. And for those of you wondering why we don’t make him a part of our family— adopting one more dog means there’s no space for the next. That’s the only mindset that gets us through fostering. We love him SO much and cannot wait for him to go home. Jess Cantu

This week, we checked the mail and found an envelope from someone (who wishes to remain anonymous). Inside was a gift that will cover food for the dogs in our care for the next THREE months.

There are no words for this kind of kindness. In rescue, we spend so much time worrying about how we’ll stretch every dollar, every bag of food, every resource — and today, someone reminded us that we are not doing this alone.

To the person behind this incredible gesture: thank you for believing in these dogs and in our mission. Because of you, tails will keep wagging, bellies will stay full, and we can keep focusing on getting these babies healthy and home. ❤️🐾

Grupo Control 🎶 thank you so much for your generous donation! We are fundraising for a local laborator mama to be spayed and for her and her baby to receive vaccines.

Bosco, the happiest boy you'll ever meet.

Bosco is a 3–4-year-old Lab/Terrier mix (~60 lbs) from South Texas. Although he was abandoned by his humans, he remains incredibly loving and loyal. He’s smart, active, and eager to please—knows basic commands, walks well on a harness (pulls with leash alone), and is crate and potty trained.

He does great with other dogs, needs a cat-free home, and would do best with older kids due to his strength and excitement. He is neutered, fully vetted, and ready for transport—he’s been waiting far too long for his chance.

Foster Notes: Bosco would do best in an active home with a secure yard, as he can jump fences. He thrives on human connection and forms deep bonds with his people.

Bella, the perfect adventure companion!

Bella is a small, athletic, and spirited pup from South Texas looking for an active home where she can be your adventure partner and constant sidekick. She loves hiking, running, car rides, and being close to her favorite human — especially riding shotgun in the front seat.

Bella is energetic, loyal, and thrives as the center of attention. While she can be selective with other dogs and does fine with neutral public interactions on leash, she would do best as the only pet in the home. She has shown curiosity toward cats without aggression but would need proper introductions.

Foster notes: Bella prefers adult attention and has shown little interest in young children, so an adult-only or older-child home would likely be the best fit. She needs an active family willing to channel her energy, include her in adventures, and allow her to bond closely with her people.

Lola is a 3-year-old Terrier mix (~35 lbs), possibly with some Chihuahua, from South Texas.

She does wonderfully with other dogs and would likely thrive in a home with canine companions. She has done well with children who respect boundaries and can match her playful energy.

Lola is sweet, playful, and eager to bond deeply with her family. She has been waiting far too long for the right fit and deserves a home committed to helping her feel safe, included, and loved.

Foster notes: Lola can be anxious at times and strongly prefers being near her people. She would do best in an active home willing to include her in routines, outings, and family activities. She continues building confidence and benefits from patience, structure, and reassurance as she settles in.
