This spring, we're walking NYC during the pandemic. NYC is full of wildlife: red-tailed hawks, peregrine falcons, raccoons, skunks, kestrels, coyotes, a multitude of songbirds as well as rats, squirrels and pigeons. I watch them, and write about them. The NY Times calls Out Walking the Dog, "part ecological journal, part personal meditation." (New York Times Profile: "A Dog Walked Into a Blog" http://nyti.ms/aRa6Af)

Also during the pandemic, more people than ever (cooped-up and craving connection with nature) are feeding them. Feels good, I know, but it's usually a prescription for trouble for humans and raccoons, alike. Raccoon babies are learning to depend on us rather than to forage in the parks. And hey: Zoonotic diseases, anyone?

Life in the urban raccoon world is complex and so is the intersection between urban humans and the wildlife that lives among them. These baby raccoons are suffering from mange and one in the litte…
