Fall planting is around the corner and that means alliums will be on the menu again!!

We love leeks, chives and scallions because they're very forgiving and low maintenance in the garden. Although excess moisture can cause white mold to grow around the base, there's otherwise hardly any diseases or pests that bother this family of plants 🌱

P.S. our fall plant list will be available soon...stay tuned!!!

Overgrown okra? Turn it into Craft Day! 🎨

Oversized okra can become fibrous and unpleasant to eat, but that doesn't mean it needs to go to waste!

A quick and easy way to dry okra is to put them (whole) on a cookie sheet and bake in your oven on the lowest temperature setting (usually 140) for several hours, turning occasionally for even drying.

Dried okra slightly shrinks in size and hardens and transforms for a number of easy crafts:

🖌 Cut them horizontally and dip the end in paint to create a star-shaped stamp
🖌 Paint the whole pod and run a string through the top for cute decorations
🖌 Once dry, the seeds rattle inside the pods creating a maraca effect!

This is a great way to let your kid's be creative and take the harvest beyond the table!

This is one of our favorite client gardens-- it was an absolute treat collaborating with the landscape architects at Wertimer + Cline to make this veggie and flower garden come to life. And the cherry on top? We get to visit this garden all year long to tend and harvest 🌱

It’s that time of year when you have to lock your front door…not to keep out intruders but to make sure none of your gardening neighbors sneak a bag of zucchini into your house 🫣

If you’re up to your eyeballs in zucchini right now, you’re not alone! Here's a quick and easy recipe that will help use up your extra harvest— we think it goes perfectly as a side to chicken on the grill or baked salmon 😋

What's that tiny pot doing on your plant?!

It's a Potter Wasp's nest 😮

But don't be alarmed and don't get rid of it! Potter wasps are actually beneficial and not typically aggressive. They're a parasitic wasp (as are Paper wasps) and will lay their eggs on or in garden pests and then when the eggs hatch, the new wasps will eat the host pest. This is good news for gardeners because they primarily target caterpillars which we all know can wreck havoc on plants!!

Well, Charleston friends, if you're feeling the scorch we can guarantee your garden is too! 🔥 And with not much chance of rain in the near future now is a great time to refresh mulch in your garden!

Adding a 2–3" layer of organic mulch (like shredded leaves, straw, pine bark, etc) regulates temperature, suppresses weeds, and most importantly in July-- keeps soil moisture in!

Check out these little cutie Cornito Peppers! 🌶

You can harvest any and all varieties of peppers while they're still green, but leaving them on to mature and get color will result in a sweeter pepper.

FYI: harvest by snipping the stem of the fruit from the plant. Do *not* pull as pulling can cause the limb to break! Be sure to store harvested peppers in the fridge to keep them crisp 🤌

How beautiful are these poppies from our client's garden??! 🌸

Quick fact: there are numerous varieties of poppies. These are *not* the poppy species used to cultivate seeds for baking-- that's the breadseed/opium poppy!
