Happy story!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Pacer is a 10 year old Belgian malanois that presented to us about a month ago with acute lethargy and inappetence. He’s an anxious guy usually, and his family had recently moved here from out of state, but they knew this seemed like something more concerning.

While Pacer seemed tense in his belly, nothing otherwise obviously jumped out his on initial physical exam as the cause of his symptoms. Lab work showed a severe non regenerative anemia (lowered red blood cell count), lowered platelets, lowered Albumin (protein level), and elevated BUN. A chronic GI process with blood loss was suspected, but abdominal radiographs showed a metallic foreign body in his stomach. His family knew exactly what it was upon viewing the images- a box cutter blade that had been discarded almost 2 weeks prior before they moved!

Pacer had an immediate surgical exploratory to remove the blade, followed by hospitalization and a total of FOUR blood transfusions before getting his bone marrow stimulated enough to start really producing more red blood cells on his own and to control gastric bleeding from the damage the blade had caused. His final transfusion came from Dorr, another Malanois (and one of our wonderful employee pets!) with a compatible blood type. Since that time, he’s been feeling great and able to be back home with his family, loving life again! His most recent recheck showed an almost normal red cell count (Go Pacer Go!).

We are so thankful to have met Pacer and his family, and to have been a part of his journey. Somehow he’s even given us some kisses! We hope that he continues to recover and live his best life!!! 😍
