"Some people think dairy farming is simple. I mean almost all of our ancestors did it, what could be so hard? You usually work at home, you are often your own boss, you get to work with animals all day and more often than not, you work alongside your family.
So what's so hard about farming?
The moment you realize one of your favorite cows has lost a calf, again, and you're unable to help her.
The high cost of production and investments putting pressure on you to perform and excel daily to pay off accumulating debt.
The calf you thought you would be able to save but the birth process was too hard and she's gone just like that.
The weather that is constantly changing and always unpredictable making it next to impossible to plant the crops.
The machinery that breaks, the cow that gets injured, the silo that freezes...The list goes on and on...
Fortunately, farmers are optimists, they are persistent and they are passionate. Some days are discouraging and every day is long but every day is also rewarding. Every day is unique and the losses you suffer and the heartache you may experience all become so minor when the sun finally starts to shine, when you help deliver a new calf, or when you wake up every morning knowing you get to work alongside your family and your pets."
