Jarion started his Houndsman career as a third-generation Beagle and Coonhound breeder, but is now focused on the South African Boerboel with Platinum Plus Boerboels: Zilla, Zuri, & Ebola.

Boerboels are a lesser known breed, but once you see them, and learn their history, you won't forget them. The name translates roughly as “farmer’s Bulldog,” and that is exactly what they were developed and are still bred to be. They gained recognition in the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2015.

A giant breed, with some pups tipping the scales at over 150 pounds, they were bred to be an all-purpose guardian and farm dog in the often difficult environment of Southern Africa. Jarion explains that every aspect of the Breed Standard serves this express purpose, from color, to stance, to gait, to temperament.

Boerboels are unique in that they are not automatically fully pedigreed at birth through lineage, the full pedigree has to be awarded. Boerboels often need to demonstrate a verifiable lineage and submit to physical evaluations that involve detailed assessments of a dog's physical characteristics. Jarion focuses on the expectations and requirements and brings his Platinum Plus Boerboels to be tested and evaluated, with his primary focus being maintaining strict adherence to the standard - and it shows! His dogs are stunning, with a presence that is undeniable.

We often talk about JOY being developed for all dogs, including large breed dogs, and Platinum Plus Boerboels are an excellent example. Jarion has been part of the JOY Dog Food family for a while, and it all started with a message through our page.
