Western Oklahoma Ranch Horse Association The Western Oklahoma Ranch Horse Association hosts Clinic and Shows promoting the sport of Reined Cow Horses

05/08/2024

Today is Saturday, May 4th, and that means we're only 2 weeks away from the much anticipated, 10th annual, Class of 2024 Induction Ceremonies & Reunion for The Bull Riding Hall of Fame!
The BRHOF is a 501c3 non-profit organization and this annual day of festive celebration and commemoration is the one and only fundraiser event that The BRHOF hosts each year.
The support of BRHOF event attendees, silent auction bidders, donors and partners makes everything we do possible.
So, to start the countdown to event day and to add to the excitement, The BRHOF is going to offer at online auction, this weekend, this beautiful, one of a kind, commemorative 2024 buckle.
Our great friends and partners at Tres Rios Silver have created this buckle to celebrate the Class of 2024 and to support the fundraising efforts of The Hall, thank you Tres Rios!
What a great gift this would make!
We'll start the bidding this morning and end the auction at midnight, Texas time, on Sunday May 5th.
Feel free to share this auction to your groups and pages but bids must be made on this BRHOF post to be valid.
Your generous bids are greatly appreciated and acknowledged.
Alright!
Who'll start the bidding?!!

Such an amazing horse! ❤️❤️❤️

On this date 50 years ago, Secretariat made history at the Kentucky Derby. Journalists at the time stood witness to greatness:

“Whatever the superlatives bestowed on the striking Meadow Stable champion beforehand, none could do justice to the record-smashing performance to which Secretariat treated the multitudes in the Run for the Roses yesterday at Churchill Downs.” - Bob Adair, Louisville Courier-Journal, 5/6/73

“He blasted into the stretch like an Apollo rocket, his momentum carrying him wide on the turn, his gigantic strides still taking large hunks out of the margin with every step…. It was far and away the most impressive stretch run in the history of the Derby…” - Arnold Kirkpatrick, Thoroughbred Record, 5/12/73

“What set the stage for the new record, clearly, was the desperate fight that developed between Sham and Secretariat through the lane…. It was magnificent, aesthetically, as well as athletically, with two superb horses battling side by side for 220 yards until the eighth pole in mid-stretch…” - Bill Nack, Newsday, 5/6/73

“[T]he performance of Secretariat was as monumental as any that has occurred through the long history of the stern test for 3-year-olds.” - Joe Nichols, New York Times, 5/6/73

Secretariat’s record time of 1:59 2/5 for the 1¼-mile Kentucky Derby still stands. Remarkably, he accelerated through each quarter mile of the race, blazing through the final quarter mile in 23 seconds flat—also a record.

The Meadow Stable team—including Secretariat’s owner Penny Chenery, trainer Lucien Laurin, jockey Ron Turcotte, groom Eddie Sweat, exercise riders Charlie Davis and Jim Gaffney, as well as stable manager Howard Gentry and team—just a year before had celebrated Riva Ridge’s Kentucky Derby victory. In 1973, Secretariat set a new standard for the Meadow—and for Thoroughbred horse racing.

Turcotte, who has retold the story countless times over the past half-century, still recalls the thrill of riding Secretariat that day at Churchill Downs. “It was the first time he put everything together,” the legendary jockey said recently. “It was like he was flying through the air.”
