Third update: All peafowl (peacocks and peahens) have new homes.

Second update: All the cattle have found a new home.

Update: For all those who gave reached out, thank you! The Sanctuary has requested all inquiries/offers of help be directed to their email: [email protected]

Sadly, Kemp Animal Sanctuary has to close its doors. Most of the animals at the sanctuary have special needs. Some require regular medications. Some have incurable diseases that aren’t currently causing distress. All of them need soft places to land. Species include goats, sheep, pot-bellied pigs, cattle, horses, llamas, peacocks, and rabbits. If you know of possible homes, please contact me and I will put you in contact with one of the owners.

For customers in the Ticonderoga/Hague/Crown Point area (or anyone who would like to come pick up their pie when they come in). My daughter’s Class of 2029 is doing a fundraiser. These pies are awesome! Contact me if you’d like to purchase.

Seriously impressed with these horses. This is terrifying, but the ability of those horses to listen to their humans made all the difference in their survival. I’ve been told these horses made it to safety.

I am getting some questions about eastern encephalitis virus (EEE). There are an increased level of cases this year relative to many other years. What you need to know:
1-The vaccines we normally do in the spring, provide solid protection for about 8 months. In the south, many horses are vaccinated twice a year because mosquito populations stick around quite a bit longer. If it has been more than 8 months since your horse received their booster, your horse is at increased risk as long as mosquitoes are present. The risk is not as high as horses who have never been vaccinated, but they are not fully protected. Normally, our season gets cold enough so that we typically vaccinate just once a year in this area.
2- The horse is a dead end host. That means your horse cannot give the virus back to mosquitoes, it cannot give it to another horse, it cannot give it to you. The only animal affected by their illness is themselves. The viral load does not get high enough to make them contagious to others. The virus is maintained in bird populations that then transmit it to mosquitoes.
So, if it has been 8 or more months since your horse had their vaccines, and you would like to take the more cautious and protective route, please call so that we can schedule some Fall boosters.

I know. Wrong time of year. But I just recently learned about this product from another veterinarian and she said it works super well and sticks to the animal well. So, put this in your bag of tricks for next summer if you have an animal prone to sunburn.

Alert: there have been a number of EEE cases in New York State this fall. This disease is protected against in most multivalent vaccines. If you haven’t had your horses’ vaccines done yet this year, I strongly recommend scheduling it ASAP.

Equine encephalitis viruses (Eastern, Western, and Venezuelan) are spread by infected mosquitos and can cause severe brain inflammation in horses and people.

Edit: I have been contacted by two people that have told me that the images are of their horses. I do not know if the images are of their horses or of animals that look very similar. While I was given permission to use these photos from the veterinarians who treated the animals in these images, I also recognize that it would be exceedingly distressing to see an image of an animal you believe to be your own whose image you did not give permission to use. My intent truly was strictly to educate because I have seen horses receive intramuscular Banamine, and I have felt truly afraid for the potential consequences. The people who have given the Banamine did not understand the potential consequences. It was never done in malice and was given at a time that they felt their horse desperately needed the Banamine. So, I have removed the images because I always want to remain sensitive to the incredibly special bond we have with our pets.

DO NOT GIVE HORSES BANAMINE IN THE MUSCLE! it should only be given orally or intravenously. You may have heard that some people give a horse a dose of Banamine in the muscle, but every vet is horrified when they hear that has happened. Sometimes, nothing bad happens when you give the dose in the muscle. However, sometimes a muscle injection will result in a disaster. The horse in this picture is showing the beginning stages of a disaster. This horse now has a clostridial myositis. It is going to require antibiotics, and the affected area will need to be sliced open. Even with those measures, things could get incredibly ugly. I will put two images in the comments showing some later stages of a clostidial myositis. The horse in the comments is not the same horse as pictured below. The images are not from my patients, but have been kindly shared for education purposes by other veterinarians.
