“Dexter was very mouthy, using his teeth on us, wouldn't walk on a leash, was destroying furniture and shoes.
My husband and I both had cuts from Dexter’s teeth on our hands and arms.
We were considering re-homing him and that’s when we called Amye.

She showed us how to take space and not let him bite us. We can take Dexter for walks now and she showed us the proper way that he should walk next to us and how to use the lead to train him.”
- Gerri and Walter, owners of 6 month old black lab Dexter

From Amye, our resident dog trainer:
“The biggest mistake I see in dog owners is that they don’t pre-act, they react.
A proper leader never reacts; they’re ready for a tough situations. And they move through problems, not run from it. Your dog can’t learn from running away.”

A dog attached to you at the hip might seem cute at first but it can actually be a sign of an unregulated nervous system, which is a very important skill for animals to learn.
When a dog is unbalanced in this department, it can come out as anxiety, aggression, chewing, barking and other behavioral issues.

I can guide you on canine behavior so that you can have a better, more peaceful home. Book an appointment with her for a Wednesday training session! 717-552-6661 🐾

For humans and dogs alike, anxiety is like a smoke alarm. It goes off when it detects a threat in our bodies or our environments — like when we feel we’re in danger, alone or out of control. In most cases (though not all), anxiety does not mean something is wrong inside us, but rather, it means there are fires in our environment — like disconnection, safety concerns, overstimulation or past trauma — that need to be addressed.

Amye has a wealth of knowledge on dog behavior that can help you better connect with your dog and have a peaceful household.

“Last night, RobRoy came to me to once again to calm his anxiousness. I sat down after a busy day and instead of him rushing in and whining like he did the previous day, RobRoy did this. He remembered that a calm position beside me was worth seeking again.

In the past I would have dismissed him and labeled him as needy, which isn’t helpful to anyone. This need to have someone regulate his nervous system can lead to MORE anxiety if he doesn’t receive the help he’s asking for.
And as a calm and confident leader, this I can do for him. My calmness costs me nothing.
If I keep dismissing him, he could get stuck in a cycle of anxiousness every time we come into the house in the evenings.
When he comes to me for help, it can further our bond.
Will RobRoy ever not have moments of anxiousness? Of course, but let’s give him the young two year old some grace and show him how to move through it. I am so pleased to see what 5 to 7 minutes of patient dog training can achieve 👏❤️”

How to calm your dog without saying a word 🐾
My two year old RobRoy is anxious and wants attention. I quietly place my hand on him and give a few slow strokes and then stop (photo 1).

RobRoy is still excited (notice his dilated pupils) but now my hand just calmly rests on him, I’m giving him the energy of stillness and helping to regulate his nervous system (photo 2).

RobRoy then takes a step sideways (in dog language, he is yielding and therefore showing respect) while my hand still rests on him. I didn’t ask for the yield, he gave it out of honor (photo 3).

I move my hand to acknowledge his respect and give another gentle stroke while still saying nothing (last photo).

If you have an anxious wired dog, don’t joint them in the chaos. Be the can your dog needs in order to calm their own nervous system.

Have you ever known a parent, boss or world leader who was pretty incompetent at their job?
So has your dog 😬
Dogs can quickly determine whether you’re in charge or not. They will challenge your authority and make sure you’re in charge because to them, their life depends on it.
An incompetent leader means death or lack of safety.
So don’t be surprised when your dog challenges you. Be the consistent, calm and confident leader they need.

Does this peaceful, calm group of dogs look like they all live under one roof? You would think so! These 7 dogs are actually part of 3 different packs as I had my kids - and their dogs! - over to our house for the holidays.
Thanks impart to the diligent dog owners effort into socialization from the beginning, these dogs calmly and seamlessly move together like a pack when they’re together. In terms of hierarchy, there are actually five leader personalities here surrounded by two followers.
Show us your pups and their canine guests over the holidays! And call Amye for all your dog training needs 717-552-6661

Be honest…what were your expectations of your dog prior to getting them?

Running partner?
Cuddle Buddy?
Guard dog?
While it is good to have goals, you must be realistic about a dog prior to inviting them joining your family. We cannot simply bring a dog in and then mold it to our liking. It’s not fair to you and certainly not fair to your dog.

Amye not only teaches obedience but goes much deeper into a dog’s behavior. She has helped many families meet dogs right before adoption so she can translate their behavior and their personality type so you have a clear picture of what kind of energy they will - or will not - bring into your life. This is far more than just knowing breed types; it’s all about understanding their place in the pack and their personality at a constitutional level.
She loves helping people find the right dog for them or to work with the personality type they have.
In 2023, let’s reset our expectations. Call Amye at 717-552-6661 (text if she doesn’t answer!)

Training Tip: Keep the daily rituals

Dogs are each day confronted with challenging and confusing situations: They have to wait patiently for their food, stay calm in the traffic while walking and sometimes stay home alone for hours. With fix daily rituals you can teach your dog that these situations are normal parts of the day and, with time, your pup will get use to these challenges as a part of his daily routine.
Call Amye to help you with any training needs! Training days are in the comfort of your own home on Wednesdays 717-552-6661

Appreciation post on dog owners who show up and do the work! 👏

Meet my canine students Radar and Loki.

Radar’s owner Peggy was in the verge of giving up because Radar had boundless, crazy energy that could occasionally leave Peggy with quite a few bruises.
Loki’s owner had lost her beloved Rottweiler and felt rescuing her next dog was her calling.

Both owners have been diligently putting in lots of time and effort to train these dogs on how to have manners and live a balanced happy life. I’m so proud of them… all of them!

This is Beau, an adorable 11 week old Pomeranian puppy and I am so glad to be training him!
He was exhausted after the initial leash session🤣 It only lasted about 8 minutes, but working new skills combined being a young puppy should never be too long in duration.
