Another pet family I spoke with told me their pet sitters will come and just let them out, feed them, and go in a matter of 10 minutes. I was appalled.

For many animals, especially dogs, that kind of visit barely scratches the surface of what they actually need. When their people are away, their routine changes, the house feels different, and they’re trying to make sense of it all. A quick food-and-out visit might handle the physical basics, but it often ignores the emotional side of care.

When I do a visit, I stay for about 30 minutes. That time matters. It gives your pet a chance to settle, connect, and feel like they’re not just being “checked on,” but actually cared for. We play, we move around, we spend a little time together so they can release energy and get the mental stimulation they need.

Play isn’t just entertainment for animals. It supports their mental health the same way activity and connection help us. It helps reduce anxiety, boredom, and stress—especially when the people they rely on most aren’t home.

Pets feel those absences more than many people realize. When families leave for work trips, vacations, or long days out, the house can become very quiet and confusing for them. That’s when stress behaviors can start to show up: pacing, whining, destructive chewing, or just withdrawal.

A thoughtful visit gives them a break in that loneliness. Time to move, time to interact, and time to feel safe again in their space.

Care for animals shouldn’t be rushed. They deserve more than a quick stop-in. They deserve to be treated the same way you would your child- with care and attention.

How I imagine mother nature is feeling this spring.
How is it we go from 78 to 30 in a day? How is it we wore shorts early last week and at the end of the week watched snow and hail fall?
Either way, I am enjoying visiting all my fur babies as their families go away for a weekend getaway-a great escape from this wierd weather!
