My pups usually hunt wild birds, but Linda thought this would be a fun event to see how Ula is coming along in her training. I think she’s doing really well! Congratulations Linda and Ula!

She just turned a year old and she has already earned her junior hunter title.

Her owner Linda says, “She was a rockstar! She has such fantastic drive and an amazing nose. She had no trouble finding birds.”

It was getting hot and humid quickly today so we got going so we could run Bogie for woodcock chicks. We went to one of our favorite spots…we call it Nirvana for a reason!

Bogie ran hard and was getting too hot so we rested him for a bit before starting to turn back. Anybody who runs dogs knows that “turning back” is code for the dog to start finding birds…or at least go on point to stall leaving. 🤣

He immediately of course got on a hot trail and came up with a hen and a brood of three 10-day old chicks!

Tim is learning to band and next year he will be on the banding permit. This spring he is an apprentice and is training under my subpermit. This was his second brood. He’s got great chick spotting, handling, and banding skills and I’m so happy to be able to share yet another outdoor activity with him!

Next spring he will be running Bogie on his own for chicks! Way to go, sweetie!! ❤️🐥

I was having so much fun taking apprentices out at the woodcock banding clinic that I forgot to take pictures!

Here are a few of Bogie and some of the almost 2-week old chicks he found! A few groups found some young broods, probably renesting after a clutch or brood was lost.

I follow Bogie around the woods on tracking expeditions fairly often. Sometimes I can’t help pinching his cute little butt. 🤣

All the splash I found was dried up. Not unusual for him to point where a bird was days ago. I call them history lessons. But good boy could smell foot scent and proceeded very cautiously.

The “whoa”s are merely a reminder. He wasn’t going to move. After I turned off the camera I moved him back a little and snugged him tight to a tree.

Banding is boring for him. He laid down. He knows the drill. 😴

First woodcock brood of the year! They hatched yesterday. Four little freshies.

Bogie tracked them. He’s got such an amazing nose!
