Our mission is to grow the sport for the next generation and support my veteran brothers and sisters. We are small family run kennel located in the heart of Upper Peninsula grouse country. Our specialty is training young dogs how to hunt grouse by using a philosophy of Genetics, Exposure and Patience. In addition, we occasionally breed high quality and healthy German Shorthaired Pointers. Our dogs

are proven in the grouse woods and you will not be disappointed! All of the dogs hunt September - December, nearly 40-50 days of hunting each fall. The dogs primarily hunt here in the U.P. and northern WI on Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock. On occasion, we head out west and hunt them on wild pheasants and prairie grouse. In addition, our seasoned dogs are woodcock banding dogs in the State of Michigan. We would be happy to help you and your dog with basic introduction (very important - birds and gunfire), foundation work, field bird work, and wild bird work. We offer full day guided hunts in the U.P. of Michigan. You can hunt over our dogs or yours. Full day of guided hunting trip includes transportation to/from arranged meeting location, bag lunch, and plenty of memories. Our rates for dog training and guided hunts are very reasonable, and we have many references are available upon request.

Ever wondered where the name Cato originated? Almost 7 years ago we popped onto the dog scene with a new product that has now had a part in training thousands and thousands of dogs. At the start, we were assembling and shipping out of our garage (there are some great stories here 😬). We’re still a small company, but at least the garage is a little bigger now!

The Cato Board is still made in America and every single one is shipped from our place here in Wisconsin.

The name Cato came from a special dog that I owned, trained, and competed with. He’s no longer with us, but his name lives on! This picture is from the 2018 US Field Trial Nationals.

Hey folks...I have been getting a lot of calls for training, boarding, guided hunts, puppies, started dogs, and seminars.

Although I TRULY am HUMBLED with the requests, just a few things to note:

We don't sell started dogs here.

We have a litter of puppies every 2 years on average...when I need one, we breed.

We book out for training, generally a year in advance.

Boarding seems to fill up, on average, 2 months in advance.

Guided hunts, generally a year in advance.

Everything for 2026 is completely full except for:

1 spot remaining for the Women's Grouse Hunting and Handling Clinic.

A handful of tickets for the Bonasa Bonanza and the tickets for the Saturday evening fundraising concert at the Bonanza.

I truly appreciate your patronage...it feels very humbling to be recognized with people desiring your services.

Sunday Morning Trivia:

Since it is nesting season, let's explore the hen and her ability.

"Most ruffed grouse nests are located at the base of trees in open hardwood stands, although other sites (such as the base of stumps, under slash, bushes, or brush piles) are commonly used. The clutch normally numbers 9 - 14 eggs, which are laid over a period of approximately 2 weeks. The eggs are incubated about _ days, and all the eggs hatch within a few hours of each other during late May and early June."

How many days are the eggs incubated?
