Storm season is officially here, so here are some storm safety tips!
1. Pack a go bag for your pets - a few days worth of food, bottles of water, a copy of their shot records, extra leashes. Keep it somewhere that you will be able to grab it quickly & won’t forget about it. You’ll be glad you did if something crazy happens & you have to get out of your house in a hurry
2. Practice tornado drills. My boys know “let’s go!” which means all 3 of them immediately jump up and follow me wherever we’re going. This comes in handy when we all need to go hide in the bathroom, and it makes it so much less stressful than having to chase them down & wrangle all 3 of them into the bathroom. If you have a shelter, practice walking them down into it & teaching them how to be calm. Consider stocking your shelter with bully sticks or other chews to keep them busy
3. Teach your dogs how to settle, together. Reward them throughout the day when they’re being calm, laying down, and just hanging out. It’s one thing if your dog can be chill by themselves, it’s another if they can all settle down together instead of trying to play/wrestle/romp around
4. All 3 of my boys know that me grabbing their collar is nothing to worry about. If I need to grab them in a hurry and yank them to safety, I don’t have to worry about them getting scared or worse, trying to bite me over getting snatched up. This is something I’ve practiced with them since they were puppies
5. If your dogs can’t safely be together in the same small room, PLEASE crate train them. Teach them that their crate is a safe place & keep your crates away from exterior doors & windows. At the very least, it’s safer for them to be crated than to be running around in the house
6. If your dogs have trouble staying calm or they get storm anxiety, there is NOTHING wrong with getting medication for them. Tiny & Ozzy both use trazodone which keeps them calm during crazy weather (bonus: great for vet visits and any other stressful situation)!
7. Microchip. Your. Pets. And make sure the information is always up to date. Microchipped pets are over 3x more likely to be reunited with their families. If something happens & you become separated it could mean the difference between losing your pets forever & getting them back safely
Stay safe out there y’all ❤️
