This is what the radiographs (x-rays) of a cat who almost passed a fishing hook would look like. Key word is almost. This fellow was presented with about 6 inches of fishing line hanging out of his re**um. The owners attempted to pull the line but were unsuccessful in removing it. This fellow required surgery to initially remove the barb, which had penetrated the bowel, and prevent any more damage to the colon before eventually opening the colon to finish removing the foreign body. The patient recovered completely. This serves as a reminder to keep fishing equipment out of the reach of pets.

In the last 2 weeks, we have seen an uptick in cases of parvovirus at Lakeside Animal Clinic. This is not uncommon in the Spring but it has started earlier this year. Parvovirus causes bloody diarrhea, vomiting and rapid death due to dehydration. It can be prevented by vaccinations and reducing exposure to the virus. Parvovirus can remain viable in direct sunlight for over a year. We strongly recommend that you keep your pets up to date on vaccinations. Lakeside Animal Clinic offers reduced priced vaccinations every Tuesday along with a reduced price wellness exam. Call the clinic at 903-887-7486 to make an appointment.

Heavy rains last Spring led to an influx of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are the intermediate host responsible for transmitting heartworms from one dog to another. We are currently seeing an increased number of dogs and 1 cat with heartworms. If your pet is not currently on heartworm prevention, we recommend having them tested and start them on prevention.
