⭐️ TREATMENT TUESDAYS ⭐️

GVH is proud to offer the CryoProbe 🥶 This special device utilizes cold, pressurized nitrous oxide to freeze off benign (non-cancerous) skin growths. It is very targeted to only touch abnormal tissue. The frozen tissue then becomes a scab and falls off on its own within a few weeks after one or two rounds of treatment 👋🏼

Why offer this service?
❎ Non-invasive
🤕 Non-painful
⏲️ Quick and efficient
❤️‍🩹 Faster healing
😷 No anesthesia needed

Ask your vet today if your pet has a growth that may be amenable to cryotherapy!

⭐️ TREATMENT TUESDAYS ⭐️

A common question we get is “what happens when my pet is taken to the back?” ‘The back’ simply refers to our expansive treatment area, where we have easy access to all our medications, supplies, and extra hands! It is oftentimes a lot more efficient for us to perform things back there than in a small exam room. We are going to try and show you some more glimpses into the treatment area over some upcoming Treatment Tuesdays 🎥

Sometimes our “treatments” are less obvious physical actions, and more subtle gestures geared towards compassionate care 🧸

Up first: our adorable patient Puffin 🐧 who was rescued by our friends at Branford Compassion Club and nursed back to health by our attentive staff. Puffin spent a few days in our ICU due to severe malnutrition and flea anemia. iPads are one tool we often utilize to keep our hospitalized patients feeling comfortable 🏡 and mentally stimulated 🧠

Your pet is always well taken care of and never “just in a cage” at GVH! ❤️💙

⭐️ TREATMENT TUESDAYS ⭐️

Heartworm disease, part 2 ❤️

What can happen when prevention is not utilized? If a dog tests positive, he or she must undergo a lengthy, painful, and costly series of treatment to be cured. GVH follows the American Heartworm Society (AHS) guidelines for optimal treatment. Read here (https://www.heartwormsociety.org/) if you are interested in learning more.

The primary treatment involves melarsomine, an FDA-approved drug administered through a series of injections to kill adult heartworms. Doxycycline, an antibiotic, is also used to eliminate a bacteria (Wolbachia) that lives within the heartworms, making them more susceptible to the melarsomine. Restricting exercise is crucial during treatment to minimize the risk of complications from dying worms. This protocol takes months to complete.

We are seeing more and more cases in the northeast, and many of these animals have no travel history. This means heartworm is HERE! Heartworm disease can be fatal without treatment, and is 100% preventable. Monthly, year-round heartworm prevention is critical. Animals are susceptible with a lapse in even one dose! PLEASE keep your pet protected ❌

BUT WAIT… what about the cats?! While cases are far less frequent and severe, feline heartworm disease DOES exist. The AHS continues to recommend that all cats be on year-round heartworm prevention, too! Don’t forget about our feline friends 🐈‍⬛

Pictured you will see our sweet patient Jolene, who is available through Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter 🐾 She has been nothing short of compliant, brave, and loving throughout her treatments. We can’t wait for her to enjoy a new lease on life, heartworm-free ❣️

⭐️ TREATMENT TUESDAYS ⭐️

Part one of our heartworm series ❤️ a very important topic for dog owners!

With so many heartworm preventives on the market, we know the choice can be overwhelming. Our doctors are happy to walk you through your options and what works best for you and your pet. In addition to several monthly oral options, GVH is pleased to offer PoHeart 12, a medication that provides 1️⃣2️⃣ months of continuous heartworm prevention with a SINGLE injection under the skin!

BENEFITS:
⏰ Convenience. The once-a-year injection can be easier to remember and manage than monthly medications. You’ll never have to remember again!
💯 Highly effective. In controlled laboratory studies, ProHeart 12 was 100% effective in preventing the development of heartworm disease when administered at the recommended dose.
💩 Broad spectrum. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, ProHeart 12 also treats existing hookworm infections.
🚧 Safety. Side effects are few and rare!
💵 Cost. Cost is comparable to oral options, and in some cases cheaper!

CONSIDERATIONS:
👶🏻 ProHeart 12 is intended for use in healthy dogs 12 months of age or older.
🩸 Dogs need to be up-to-date on their annual heartworm test before receiving ProHeart 12, as the medication is not effective against adult heartworms.
🐜 Don’t forget about flea and tick prevention!

Check out the video compilation for a step-by-step look into our fantastic patient Tuck’s ProHeart experience. He seems pretty pleased! Inquire today and never worry again ‼️

⭐️ TREATMENT TUESDAYS ⭐️

Ever wonder why we close over lunch some Fridays? We promise it’s for good reason! Staff meetings play a vital role in ensuring our hospital and team members provide you and your pet(s) with the highest standard of care and quality customer service.

Our July staff meeting was centered around cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The entire GVH team participated in a slideshow presentation followed by hands-on demonstrations.

GVH follows the Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER) guidelines, which were established in 2010 by experts in an effort to provide true evidence-based veterinary CPR guidelines. We try to review the updates as often as possible to remain up-to-date, as the field and knowledge is constantly expanding.

These delicate situations represent a true team effort, and it is extremely important to us to remain educated and prepared in the event of an emergency. Check out this behind-the-scenes look at our lunch and learn 📸

⭐️ TREATMENT TUESDAYS ⭐️

Our adorable patient Obi wanted to demonstrate how quick and easy an EKG can be! Sometimes it even comes with treats 🍪

An electrocardiogram (EKG) is a non-invasive way to measure the heart’s electrical activity ⚡️ It can be used to detect various heart conditions, including heart attacks, arrhythmias, and structural abnormalities. Electrodes are placed on the body to detect electrical signals, and that gets translated to a wave pattern on a graph 📈 Your veterinarian may recommend this test as part of a pre-anesthetic screening, or a workup for a potential heart problem identified on exam.

We recognize the importance of your pets and always want to provide the standard of care. GVH is proud to offer the rapid CardioPet ECG through our laboratory, which takes only minutes to perform, and only minutes to receive an interpretation. Happy heart, happy home ❤️
