When a dog’s nose becomes a tool for protecting our water!

We are excited to share this story from The Outfall, highlighting the incredible work of canine water leak detection!

Every day, millions of gallons of treated water can be lost through underground leaks that are difficult to locate. Our specially trained detection dogs are helping change the way we approach this challenge.

By using their extraordinary sense of smell, these dogs help water utilities identify potential leak locations, allowing crews to focus their efforts, save valuable time, and protect one of our most precious resources. 💧

A special thank you to Robert Osborne and The Outfall for helping tell our story and bringing attention to the important role working dogs can play in water infrastructure.

Not every water loss investigation produces a neat set of findings that all point to the same place.

A K9 team may identify an area of interest where previous acoustic work hasn't produced a clear result. Acoustic equipment may identify something the K9 team doesn't. System information may suggest loss in an area where neither method initially provides a strong finding. Those differences aren't necessarily evidence that one method is right and another is wrong. They are information.

The important question is what to do with that information. Understanding what each detection method is actually measuring, the conditions that can affect it, and the limitations of the information it produces can help determine whether an area warrants another look, a different approach, or additional investigation.

These are the situations where conversations between water professionals and K9 detection professionals become especially useful. Instead of expecting every tool to produce the same answer, we can better understand what each finding contributes to the investigation.

The K9PDA 2026 Water Infrastructure Innovation Workshop creates an opportunity to have those conversations while looking at the realities of water loss work, including the cases that aren't perfectly straightforward.

Water loss investigations rarely depend on a single source of information. System data, acoustic leak detection, field observations, K9 Water Leak Detection, and other methods can each contribute something different to the investigation. They don't necessarily measure or detect the same thing, so their findings won't always look identical.

A K9 team is working with target odor associated with treated water. Acoustic equipment is working with sound. System data may point to patterns or changes that suggest loss somewhere within the network. Each provides information through a different detection pathway.

That distinction matters. When findings overlap, they can strengthen the case for further investigation in an area. When they don't, the difference can also be useful information and a reason to look more closely at what each method is telling us.

The goal isn't to make one tool compete with another. It's to understand what each can contribute and use the available information to make better decisions about where to investigate next.

That is part of the conversation at the K9PDA 2026 Water Infrastructure Innovation Workshop, where water professionals and K9 detection professionals will have the opportunity to look at how different sources of information contribute to water loss investigations.

For water professionals, working with a K9 detection team doesn't require becoming an expert in detection dogs. But understanding what the team is actually doing in the field makes the information they provide much more useful.

The dog is searching for target odor associated with treated water, not for the pipe itself or simply for the presence of water. That odor can travel through soil, cracks, utility pathways, drains, and other routes before becoming available to the dog, which means the location where the dog shows a change in behavior may not be directly over the leak.

The handler's role is just as important. Detection isn't simply a dog giving a predefined alert and producing a location. The handler watches changes in behavior, evaluates those changes across the search, considers how odor may be moving through the environment, and uses that information to identify and document areas of interest for the utility.

Understanding those fundamentals helps water professionals know what information they're receiving from a K9 search, what conclusions can reasonably be drawn from it, and how those findings can be considered alongside the other information available during a leak investigation.

Being able to train and handle a detection dog is only part of working in K9 Water Leak Detection. A handler working with a utility also needs to understand the environment they're stepping into.

Water distribution systems have their own infrastructure, terminology, operational considerations, safety requirements, and established methods for investigating water loss. The findings from a K9 search also have to be communicated in a way that is meaningful to the people responsible for deciding what happens next.

That doesn't require a K9 handler to become a water operator or leak detection technician. It does require enough understanding of the industry to ask better questions, recognize relevant information, communicate clearly with utility personnel, and understand how the K9 team's findings fit into the larger investigation.

For water professionals, that matters too. Bringing a K9 team onto a system should mean working with professionals who understand that they're entering an established operational environment, not simply showing up with a dog to conduct a search.

A K9 water leak search starts long before the dog begins working. For a K9 team coming into a utility, understanding the system they're being asked to search matters. Maps, infrastructure layout, pipe materials, known problem areas, previous leak detection work, system history, and what utility personnel are seeing in the field can all provide important context for planning a search and understanding the information it produces.

No one knows a water system better than the people who operate and maintain it. That knowledge can help a K9 team understand the environment they're working in, while the K9 search provides the utility with another source of information about where target odor is present.

This is where communication between water professionals and K9 detection professionals becomes especially valuable. The handler brings expertise in the dog, odor, and search behavior. Utility personnel bring expertise in their infrastructure and operations. Understanding what information each can provide makes it easier to plan searches, communicate findings, and determine the next steps in a leak investigation.

That exchange of knowledge is part of what we'll be exploring at the K9PDA 2026 Water Infrastructure Innovation Workshop.

A detection dog shows a change in behavior during a water leak search. Now what?

That question is much bigger than it sounds. A K9 team isn't there to point to a spot on the ground and declare that a pipe is leaking directly underneath it. Target odor can move through soil, pavement, utility pathways, drains, cracks, and other routes before becoming available to the dog. The handler has to recognize and interpret the dog's behavior. But the investigation doesn't stop there.

The utility's knowledge of the system, information from other detection methods, field conditions, and eventual verification all provide context for what the K9 team observed. Bringing those pieces together helps turn an area of interest identified during a K9 search into useful information within the larger leak investigation.

Understanding how those pieces of information fit together is an important part of using K9 Water Leak Detection effectively alongside the other tools and expertise involved in water loss investigations. The K9PDA 2026 Water Infrastructure Innovation Workshop brings water professionals and K9 detection professionals together to examine that process, share expertise, and better understand what happens between “the dog showed interest here” and “we found the leak.”

A K9 Water Leak Detection search doesn’t always unfold the way we might expect.

On a recent deployment, K9 Flare encountered target odor immediately after beginning her search. Sometimes relevant information comes after covering significant ground. Other times, things get interesting right out of the gate.

For water professionals, moments like this illustrate why the preparation of the K9 team matters. A dog recognizing target odor is only one part of an operational detection team. The handler must also be able to recognize and interpret the dog’s behavior, make appropriate decisions as the search develops, and communicate the resulting findings in a way that is useful to the larger water loss investigation.

That is part of the value of working with K9 teams that have appropriate education, training, and certification for this specialized work. We believe strongly in the importance of certification, which is why K9 Water Leak Detection teams certify through our K9 Pipeline Detection Organization (K9PDA). The certification process evaluates the working team, not simply whether a dog can recognize target odor, because successful operational detection depends on both ends of the leash.

Utilities aren’t simply hiring a dog that can detect treated water odor. They’re hiring a trained and certified team capable of collecting, interpreting, and communicating information that can contribute to the investigation.

This week, Lo**ta Shaffer is attending the European Water Leakage Summit, representing K9 Water Leak Detection and sharing how K9 teams are being used in water loss investigations with water professionals from around the world.

It’s exciting to see K9 Water Leak Detection included in conversations about water loss on an international level and to continue building awareness of how K9 teams can contribute to water loss investigations.
