Nico saved Layla this weekend.
Yesterday we danced all day, squeezing in meals when we can, which makes for a difficult diabetes day. You have to calculate timing before she dances and decide how many carbs to give free and account for nerves etc.
After treating two lows, urgently changing a pump at midnight (supplies were in the car) we were exhausted. I silenced her alarms as to try not to wake others in the hotel and apparently accidentally put my phone on vibrate. Which means we were not getting alerts.
Three hours later at 3 am Nico barks, which he never does. He was panting and pacing. Layla's dex just said "HIGH". Fingerstick was 487 😳. She had started spilling ketones and was starting to feel nauseated.
I quickly got more insulin in and so much water. She came down and slept HARD. Without that dog who knows how much longer she would have gone like that, DKA was on the horizon.
She felt crummy and sluggish this weekend but you couldn't tell it on stage ♥️
In fact, she spiked again before her solo and was getting nauseated. Nico made sure she was ok after 🥺
Before her tap she was starting to go low. She swigged a sprite (thanks to the fast acting Andrea Malcolm and Tatum Carden), danced her heart out and Nico kept wanting to run on stage to alert her.
Gosh we love this dog. ♥️♥️
