My mom is a goofball … a cool goofball, but goofball nonetheless. She bought herself an old farm truck and decided she would just fix it up herself. The problem? Well, she’s short. So she can’t reach the stuff inside the engine bay. Her solution? She had her kitchen step-ladder out there. But I have to give her credit. She DID get the alternator installed all by herself. Go Mom!

Mom saw this in the city and asked if I needed one of these so we could go on runs together. I said, “Sure, Mom! But I’m going to need a wagon on my end of that leash!” 😂🤣

Well, the Nova, Dad, Mom & the Good Luck Goat made it to Norman. It wasn’t exactly ahead of the storms, so they got to experience the best water cooling system offered in a 1974 Nova … the interior was misted for their cooling pleasure. But poor Goat is so exhausted from a full day of racing & then the stress of the 500 mile drive through severe thunderstorms that he didn’t even shower before he got into bed. (Gross!). Mom & Dad sure did! Night ya’ll! Don’t call early because the Daugherty crew is lights out until further notice!

While you won’t find a video of it, the first pass done by Dorty & the Nova on Day 2 was tragic. Why, You ask? Well, Dad was rushing because Mom took too long getting ready and they were late to the track. Since it was CLEARLY her fault, Dad thought it only fair that she help get the car ready so he didn’t miss out on the first pass. HUGE MISTAKE! Dad told her to air the tires up to 15 psi. What did she do? She used the air pump gage, which EVERYONE knows is inaccurate, to air up the tires. So instead of checking with the good gage after airing up, she just gave Dad a thumbs up & off he went … with tire’s overinflated to 20 psi. It was bad! Over 11 seconds! Downright humiliating! He blew off the tires, tried to recover but he was so flustered he did all the wrong things and ultimately wasted the first pass. Now Mom is going to have to go through some intense re-training on the right and wrong tools to use for tire pressure checks. But my guess is it will be a long time before Dad has her help out again!

Well, as you all know, Dorty isn’t one to leave ‘good enough’ alone. Nope! If something CAN be improved, he is going to do it … even if he’s at a race track … with no other vehicle … no other belts … and a functioning alternator. Yup, you guessed it! He bought a bigger alternator, cut the belt so he’d know what size he’d need, borrowed a car, drove to the next town to get three belt options, back to the track, new alternator and belt installed and then he ran a 10.377 1/4 mile. Not bad for a days’ work!
