This week we celebrate Birdie, one of our Hospital kitty's birthdays!! It's a guess as to her age but one thing we do know, she still can get herself into trouble!! Some time last week she helped herself to 4 bags of feline lean treats and even was smart enough to hide the evidence!! Happy Birthday Bird, we love you!! ❤️🐱

For our horse owning clients that may have heard about the herpes virus outbreak in Texas and Oklahoma, here is a fact sheet on the disease and recommendations on biosecurity protocols for horses that travel. At this time there have not been any cases in NY but it is wise to be careful until this simmers down a bit.

Equine herpesvirus (EHV) is a family of equine viruses named by numbers including EHV-1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 with EHV-1,3,4 posing the most risk for domestic horses. EHV is a common DNA virus that occurs in horse populations worldwide. The two most common species are EHV-1 and EHV-4.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at VCA Colonial Animal Hospital!

As we celebrate the 4th of July, don’t forget that fireworks and festivities can be stressful—and even dangerous—for our pets.

Here are some quick safety tips to keep your furry family members safe and sound:

🔹 Keep pets indoors during fireworks
🔹 Create a quiet, comfortable space for them to relax
🔹 Avoid giving table scraps that could upset their stomach
🔹 Make sure collars and microchips are up to date in case they get scared and run
🔹 Take dogs for walks before the fireworks begin

Wishing you and your pets a safe, happy, and relaxing 4th of July!

Today was a very bittersweet day for us at GCAH. After pretty close to 25 years (not counting a few years "leave of absence" in Oregon) our ace technician Kelley has retired. In the summer of 2000 she saw a sign on the side of 222 that said Future Home of Groton City Animal Hospital and pulled in to see what that was all about. A quick interview later ( where she got asked some of the weirdest questions one could get in an interview) she walked in the door on Dec 4, 2000 to a clinic that wasn't even finished and didn't see its first patients until early January 2001. She has stuck it out through all these years of cold and hot days on the road, innumerable patients depositing various body fluids on her, happy patients giving kisses and purrs and the not so happy ones giving the raised lip ( or more) and the growls and swats. She has done it ALL with a smile and good humor (most of the time) 😊 She has been an invaluable member of the staff through all these years and will be missed beyond measure. Absolutely best wishes Kelley for a wonderful retirement with lots of adventures.
